31-year-old female StarCraft veteran maRie joins oGs

Posted by Patrik "Raistlin" Hellstrand 6 months ago

Two days ago we saw StarTale sign the ZOWIE DIVINA winner Aphrodite. Today we see Old Generations (oGs) pick up the 2005 MBCGame Ladies bronze medalist "maRie".

The 31-year-old Zerg player from South Korea has a history with OGN Sparkyz, but retired in 2006. Jong Mi "maRie" Lee remained active in the StarCraft scene as a show host on the channel OnGameNet.

maRie's StarCraft 2 ranking profile shows a mid-high ranking in the Master division in Korea.

of course she can achieve things, she has to work hard though if she wants to be in the top, that would be difficult, but not impossible!!

#10 Well, she's high masters in KR, which in itself is an impressive feat. Didn't follow BW, so I'm not sure about her achievements.

#11 theres thousands in "high masters in korea" its not THAT impressive of a feat...
i mean only in grandmaster there is 200.....

i took a long at the liquipedia on her achivements, only woman tournies...
just what sc2 needs, less focus on skill...

#12 High Masters IS the requirement to sign up for Code A preliminaries. So yeah, based on that she's in about the same league as every other person trying to get into Code A. Less focus on skill my foot.

Re-posted here because I think this is extremely important when evaluating team pickups (especially when it comes to gender issues):

Yes, but THEY HAVE THEIR OWN TOURNAMENTS. What's better:

1) A guy player who will probably do ok in tournaments but doesn't have the potential to win any.

2) A less skilled girl who has the potential to win every girl tournament she enters.

As far as sponsor exposure goes, I think the choice is pretty clear here. Just because she's not as good as the best guys doesn't mean she's bad, and in her arena she's probably one of the top players there is.

#20 ur just filling in on the "girls are worse" part... sad that there is no believe in their potential anymore, lets give them free chances bcus they suck so hard shall we?
On the publicity issue on male tournies vs female, the male tournies have FAAAR superior viewer-numbers, the girl tournies are allmost purely a nietche-thing, so if thats the reason they use to justify it, then they really need a new publicity-strategist.

#18 So, there is a lot of people trying to get into the code A who doesn't have team, what ur saying has NO effect at all on the current situation...
By these preliminaries, ur foot has less focus on skill... i feel sorry for it.

what #14 is saying is so true in this situation, while i have true belief that a female has the same chance to rise to the very top just like nestea mvp mma or alike... i have no belief that any of these low-tier pickups EVER will, they're simply not high-tier.
also to go back on my point #18 if i could compete for a code A spot does that mean i deserve a spot on a top-notch team?

I mean these are the superb teams...
i could possibly understand it a little if it was the unknown hubbabubba team located in som1's basement, but i would expect proffesional teams like these to have some integrity....

#21 Name me a few Code A hopefuls that don't have a team. Every Code A qualifier I watch the only few teamless people ( such as lOveShinyStar ) were approached by teams but are teamless by choice / parents not allowing.

Note that there's a difference between people "trying to get into Code A" and people who qualify to try to get into Code A.

#22 she Isnt IN code A, she is simply able to compete in code B (NOT the tourny part u watch, but she can compete so she can end up in the tourny part)

I cannot name any cus we havent heard of any of them... but we do know there are hundreads in code B.... and there aint hundreads in these teams.
So with any math skills at all, ul be able to decree that there is a lot without teams in code B (COMPETING for code A).

You do know she'll have to compete in the online (non-watchable) part like every1 else...

#24 Errr no. You can follow Code B tournaments. Back when Torch was with Gom they streamed it. And even the latest one Khaldor was on site covering it. Brackets were updated regularly on TL and they were posted on liquipedia as well.

Just because you don't know shit doesn't mean you can spew them all over the place.
