Stephano conquers IPL 3

Posted by Radoslav "Nydra" Kolev 7 months ago

After a one-sided ZvZ grand final, Ilyes "Stephano" Satouri is crowned IPL 3 champion, winning the $30,000 first place prize. The French zerg completely outplayed FXOLucky, walking away with an incredible 4-0 victory.

Stephano, who was the only foreigner left at the Ro4, trumped TheSTC 3-1 to reach the grand final match against FXO's zerg Lucky. The young French player threw the audience in a state of explicable joy by defeating his fourth Korean player in a row and with a flawless 4-0 to that.

Stephano stepped on the stage to accept his $30,000 first place prize check under the unabating cheer of the crowd, which did not get tired of chanting his name. This is also Stephano's first victory in a major tournament but which also earns him a spot at GomTV's Blizzard CUP at the end of 2011.

IPL 3: Origins Top 8
1st: France Stephano, $30.000
2nd: Korea Lucky, $12.000
3rd-4th: Korea MMA, $7.000
3rd-4th: Korea TheSTC, $7.000
5th-8th: Korea Puma, $3.000
5th-8th: United States Idra, $3.000
5th-8th: Korea Inori, $3.000
5th-8th: Netherlands Ret, $3.000

Since it was Bo5, he bet TheSTC 3-1, and not 2-1.

anyway, nice ZvZ for a player who keeps saying its his worst matchup !

time to go "TO DA BANK !"

- What do u think did u practice enough to win this LAN tournament?
Stephano: "No i didn't practice enough to deserve the win but i guess i have the skill!"
- What are u gonna do with ur skill?
Stepahno: "I'm gonna go to Da B A N K !"

Nice.

True talent is the key. We can now stop hating koreans playing in our tournaments. It has paid off ;P.

It is not luck when you take down 3 koreans in bo3, bo5 and bo7 matches.

Totally awesome.

I hope they don't release any replays with Stephano so the Koreans can't copy him! :)

Ya, it's time for Stephano to show what he's really made of in Korea GSL ;)
Definitely the best Z outside of Korea, no doubt.

3 foreigners in the top 8 of a tournament with tonnes and tonnes of koreans. Amazing tournament for the foreigner community really.

Even more amazing tournament for Stephano, hope he sticks around longer than a year really.

Very nice, didn't expect from him to win at all. I thought that he is gonna fall to the TheSTC, but really well done. Also, very nice prizes for all places.

#12 Stephano is very good , but dont go that far

Sen , Idra , Nerchio , Dimaga , Ret are better then Stephano imo.
Every time , when some "no name player" win big turnament people go crazy abouth that , and then ? he dont win big event anymore..

Moon , Torzain , Ret etc , they all have some shining moments.. and people go crazy abouth them.. and now ? They dont even go to semi finals in big turnaments..

You can hate him , wanna kill him etc , but only Idra is always high in turnaments and keep wining them. Like i said Stephano is really GOOD really ! , but how can you say he is beeter then these players Sen , Idra , Nerchio , Dimaga , Ret because he win one big turnament ? eh no:)

#19 i love how you dont mention nestea...consistency is the key here although he doesnt seem to be at his peak but still feared in korea

o and i think a lot of the well known players have exploitable weaknesses that an up and coming player can observe and counter but the well known player dont really know what hes up against the other way around.

mma for example has always had a really weak early game because he tend to take early game risks in sacrifice for late game potential. lucky knew that and dominated him 3-0

#19 I like how you forgot that IdrA slumped very hard and was getting destroyed left and right until the last IEM, that he won (It has to be noted that IEM's talent pool was pretty weak compared to IPL3). I also like how you place Nerchio ahead of Stephano when he has a negative online record against him, and cant perform at his online level at LAN

Stephano played good. He will get even better in the next months, because he's focusing only on gaming for a year.

Congratz to him on this big achievement and a step closer to maybe him not stopping after a year of progaming :)

#19 Are you kidding me? Obviously winning tourneys is a parameter but it's far from being the only one. You can tell Stephano is on par if not better than those players simply from watching his gameplay. He is insanely solid and delivers some flawless games. Ret and IdrA aren't on par because they are unstable. Also IdrA plays very greedy early game and basically every korean out there cheeses him because they know they can (he is getting bunkered by like every korean terran he plays >_<). Sen, Dimaga and Nerchio are prolly on par with him, but Dimaga and Sen have been under the radar tourney wise and Nerchio... well he beats a lot of players, but not many of them are korean, but tbh his gameplay is pretty scary too.

Stephano stands out because he has been improving in a very fast pace up until now and winning IPL3 was the climax. That's why he rightfully deserves the praises and attention he receives.

#19 uhh Thorzain just came 2nd in Dreamhack Valencia so your claims are pretty invalid... besides, Idra's MLG placement has been rather sub par lately, and the only big achievement he has so far is IEM.

Eh you dont get this at all , all peaople that write back to my #19 comment.
For example you write that dimaga is worste player , because Stephano win now , but you dont remmember Dimaga games in World vs Korea at GOM studio ?
He beat Nestea and other tip top kr players..and now hes not play that good.
Other example .. Sen play at NASL finals ? WAS IMBA! , and now where is sen.. ?
Nerchio has some wins to.. vs very good players..
Idra is one off the best zergs from beta..he won meny turnaments , was in top 8 in many turnaments etc.
The point is every player has big moments.. im cheering for every zer player , because i play zerg ,and i hope Stephano will play that good all the time , but its not posible..

You seriously should not compare gomtv invitational-world vs korea match and 30 000$ money tournament to each other.

Even though Dimaga is best foreing zergs. the world vs korea match was more like a kid's toying ground than a real fighting. Why? Because after world vs korea match they had this real money tournament. And in this real money tournament every foreing failed to succeed and so did Dimaga. I mean.. Huk beated Nestea also.. but the match was not for money and Nestea said he just wanted to create fancy game.

The situation was very different in IPL. You have 30 000$ to aim for. No-one is toying there. Stephano took 3 koreans in bo3,bo5 and in finals bo7. That kind of stuff has not happend before in such a big tournament like this was. Taking one korean out is big thing yes. And it happend very long time in Brood War too when
took down silentcontrol in WCG (2005) playoff's. But it has never happend twice in same tournament by a one foreing player.

Another interesting view point is that the game has been around now over year, yet Stephano was still able to compete with these mad koreans.

Thinking about case Idra. I remember i wrote one column (hate post rofl) how Idra will get behind when truly talented players arrive. That happend in Brood War and it has happend in SC2 too. Point is, people are getting better and Idra is not among that group of truly talented people even though he can macro. Idra is having big slump and it's not because he is worse player than before. He is just worse than many truly talented players.

What comes to Sen, he has allways been the most talented zerg's in world in BW and in SC2 too. But what do you really know what he is doing right now? He has not dissappeared or being less succeeded player. Check your facts.

----

Community has gotten used to see certain names to succeed. Expecially if you come from Brood War scene you wait Idra, Nony, Dimaga, Tarson, Mana, Mondragon, Fenix, etc. succeed in this game. Then comes some "never heard" Stephano and beats up everyone. OR as a finn i want to point out Elfi. He took fex. Nada out in Assembly 2011. And was shocking everyone getting in final's at IEM VI - tournament
. Elfi has had very good results a long time.. so has stephano. Truly talented players.

Maybe our and also your problem is that we are somehow missing the true talent because we're so sure in our imagination who are best players and who are not. But as we see. Going simply into details, the future maybe very bright if more highly talented players pop out, like Stephano just did.

I dont want to see old players do just ok. We need players who can shock the SC2 scene with their amazing ability to beat everyone, including korean's, down.

Actually Stephano could well be one of the best if not the best zerg player out there. And I mean he won all the koreans like ...convincingly. He had absolutely no problem handling the koreans and their styles, it seemed more like all the koreans were thrown off by Stephano's "special style" as non of their timings truly seemed to hit. For instance STC played phenomenally but his timings just didn't hit at all, Stephano just cleaned up every timing in every game, which seemed to confuse the korean a lot.

Jumping into conclusions like Stephano is the perfect zerg / Stephano is phenomenal and the best zerg in the planet is a bit foresighted.

Stephano has probably momentarily popularized a completely new style of play, Stephano's secret is more than anything the lings. Pay attention to his promotions on lings, the timing on the promotions and the standard timings. Stephano also plays with lesser economy than most of the zergs - if you notice his remaxing capibilities are not as good as for instance the ones of korean zergs. He seriously plays on the rope - his economy holds if his units stay alive and he wins every fight, as long as he wins every fight thnx to his superior upgrades there's np..

but trust me, the koreans and all the players that now know stephano his style will be monitored heavily. In the next tournament his run prolly won't be as smooth as now, as you can bet on terrans pushing him with +1 armors next time. They'll analyze the games and notice that the intial push-back on their pushes by Stephano is mainly caused by his upgrade advantage and they'll fix it, next time the pushes will come with armors - as long as you trust the korean players.

Morely I am stunned, absolutely stunned, that we saw absolutely no Korean terran play heavy mech vs. Stephano. He goes pretty ling-heavy, i believe his style would be more punished by mech than bio. But these are just my thoughts...

Yup Elfi seems to be another up and coming player! Though it's not as certain as in Stephanos case. But remember it's hard to stay on top once you reach it!
To be honest Stephano played better at assembly than Dimaga, not that Dimaga played bad. But he himself told that Stephano is much much more talented than himself. At assembly Stephano was pretty much a noname for me who doesn't really follow the scene.

Whoa Stephano won, like I said all can happen in ZvZ. Congrats Stephano! So much more success than in war3, really that's called potential.
