Overheating bug confirmed - how to fix it

Posted by Patrik "Raistlin" Hellstrand 1 year ago

Your graphics card might overheat playing StarCraft 2, as the computer will try to render an infinite number of framerates.

- "Screens that are light on detail may make your system overheat if cooling is overall insufficient. This is because the game has nothing to do so it is primarily just working on drawing the screen very quickly," explains Blizzard Customer in the tech support forum.

For a temporary workaround, go to your Documents/StarCraft II/Variables.txt and set frameratecapglue to 30 and frameratecap to 60.

Add these lines to Variable.txt:
frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60

Other known issues are the unability to run StarCraft 2 in compability mode in Windows, black screen when trying to use a Quick Cam webcam.

well my graphic card has already burned during the beta.

And of course when i write to blizzard to get some explanation thay were answering that there is no way that sc2 had cosed that. That it was my video card's drivers foult.
And now they finally admit it.
What a joke...

instead of sc2 i was forced to buy a new VGA. thx blizz.

My graphic card was burned out and was unfunctional after 1-2 games.

Geforce 8800 GTS OC (Asus). Had to buy a new one right after that. Never had problems before.

I also get a blackscreen, i launch a SC2 game then try to play CS 1.6 on steam ou any other HALF LIFE mods the game works as you can hear the sound when you roll over menus and you can even get in a game, but you don't get any HUD info like crosshaire, ammo, etc...

Have to reboot to play cs

I run the game on a macbook pro and editing the variables.txt helps. But everytime I reboot my computer it resets so I have to edit it again. Anyone know of any permanent solution?

maybe setting it to readonly?

and this more a hardware failure. Software using standard available API in even most ridiculousway should never be able to fry the hardware. Yes, blizzard failed somewhat because they didn't cap the framerate so video card calculated as much frames as it could but the card should disable itself long before physical damage. How is it different than running a benchmark software which tests the hardware to its fullest?
Besides it's not a fix but a workaround.
