Blizzard and KeSPA come to an agreement

Posted by Radoslav "Nydra" Kolev 1 year ago

One of the harshest IP rights war in the eSPORTS world is finally over. Blizzard Entertainment has come to terms with the Korean eSPORTS Association concerning the broadcasting of StarCraft games.

Blizzard, OnGameNet and MBC Game (the medias broadcasting KeSPA-affiliated BroodWar games) have finally settled their dispute. The TV channels will now be officially licensed by Blizzard to broadcast StarCraft matches by paying the Anaheim company an annual license fee.

The fight over the intellectual property rights seems to be coming to a close. The dispute between Blizzard and Kespa will be settled amicably as of now, and a license contract will be signed shortly.
The scheduled court date on the 13th has been delayed, the reason being the three parties, ongamenet, mbcgame, and Blizzard coming to an agreement.

Three parties are currently discussing the terms for a brighter future of e-sports in Korea. Ongament, and MBCgame will be at liberty to produce and sell starcraft contents, and open starcraft tournaments.
Both tv networks have agreed to give exposure to blizzard with the logo, and the license fee will be given to Blizzard each year, the fee is unspecified at this time.

This is a huge relief for all StarCraft fans who were concerned with the future of their favorite game in the Mecca of eSPORTS. We are yet to see what the KeSPA politics towards StarCraft 2 will be.

Ongamenet and MBCgame won't cast sc2 anyway... Their jobs are only about BW, so nothing will be changed to sc2 scene in korea.

Very good, without this Sc2 in Korean would be only GSL, now we will see explosion of leagues, living as progamer in Korea will be less risky with more leagues. Koreans will skyrocket in skill and like in bw the gap will only increase as korean scene will grow.

Actually GOM TV still have exclusive rights for SC2 in Korea. So it will still be GSL only, as GOM will not let anyone to have a big tournament at the same time as any GSL event (which is most of the year)

Blizzard however gave up on trying to kill BW esport. Good for BW

I don't see why some of you think this has something to do with SC2. The article states "We are yet to see what the KeSPA politics towards StarCraft 2 will be" so it's clear that it's all about broodwar.

#22, what do you mean trolling? It´s true that GOMtv has exclusive broadcasting rights on SC2 in Korea, OnGameNet and MBC Game won't be able to broadcast anything with their permission. I find it unlikely that MBC or OGN will have any SC2 content on their channels.

*speculation follows*
On the other hand, KeSPA might finally allow for progamers to play SC2 from now on, so we might see more established proteams getting an SC2 rosters.
Since KeSPA has acknowledged Blizzard's IP rights, then Blizzard will have no reason to force KeSPA to use their servers for the game (as it is no longer an issue), so a possible outcome of this would perhaps be LAN support.

Of course, this news primarily affects BW and secures its safety. Any possible effect on SC2 is pure speculation.

#27 - I think all points you make are valid, except the part about LAN support. They have a licensing model for tournaments in all markets, and this could change from year to year as well (ie. they could decide not to renew with GOM TV, or vice versa).

The no-lan option is what gives them control and allows them to enforce these things, they will not relinquish that control.

Cheers
E
