Blizzard games to miss the WCG '11 finals?

Posted by Radoslav "Nydra" Kolev 11 months ago

According to Thisisgame.com, there is a strong chance that this year's WCG grand finals will not feature any games by Blizzard Entertainment. This means that this might be the first year that we will not see BroodWar in the game selection.

WCG 2011, whose grand finals are supposedly to be held in Korea, might not feature any Blizzard games. The major reason stems from WCG's main sponsor and KeSPA member Samsung Electronics. Apparently, Samsung has strong objections to BW, WC3 and SC2 being included in WCG's game list which might lead to the leading RTS-s missing the finals.

WCG have raised some objections to this move, stating that exclusion of Blizzard games from the list will lead to losing other sponsors, but Samsung's decision so far remains adamant.

Further obstacle comes from WCG's main broadcaster OnGameNet, which Blizzard are currently suing for intellectual property rights. It might be so that Blizzard games are not to be broadcasted in Korea and Korean gamers are not to take part at the WCG grand finals.

The end of the matter is still to unfold as we wait for an official statement by WCG.

No RTS at WCG !?!? (especially when its held in S.Korea ffs !!!)

are they fking out of their minds ?

like srsly...

at least SC2 HAVE to be there, it would be the biggest WCG rts tournament since 2004, 2005, 2006 (golden years of BW, when tons of countries had their participant, some of them even more than 1)

I mean cmooon ...

strong objections from samsung.. too much KeSPA in that. It's really sad.
Let's put AoE and C&C in there then for replacing SCBW and WC3..

ahaha game over WCG no1 will care about it if there none blizzard games. RTS was the main events. So the only real game it will be CS and maybe fifa witch is kinda stupid to watch. RIP WCG if this is true but i think they will put sc2/wc3/sc because if they dont they will lose most of the ppl who watch it.

Good punishment for both side.

Blizzard still trying to make money no matter how (10eu to change aka is a joke ?). Good to see that sometimes they go too far ad it doesnt pay off.
And WCG who will lose most of the audience trying to be as greedy as blizzard.

Without BW and SC2, the only reason for me to watch WCG is CS 1.6... and is not enough. This is bad for everyone, Samsung, Blizzard and the scene

Well I doubt that Blizzard care about this a lot because it doesnt hit them so much the game sold well anyways, Samsung also would not suffer from this because they are way to big.

WCG is under big pressure now do they want to lose main sponsor or main games and probably 80% of fans? Ofc those few people that are able to win WCG are also suffering from this :)

I just hope WCG finds a new sponsor (it will be very hard) but from esport fan perspective its always better to see scbw, wc3 and sc2 rather than some mobile racing games or guitar hero...

Well, IDK, never really taken a good look on WCG apart from replays...

But, could anyone shed me some light on this? What on Earth does Samsung have against Blizzard's RTS-games?

E: Aha; it looks more like KESPA's doing something in the background instead.

I do can imagine WCG without BW because besides Koreans there are not many skilled players playing it, but SC2 and WC3 not being at the WCG would be blasfemy.

WCG was watched by millions cause of war3 and bw. What do they think? Some games nowhere in popularity, interest and esports as Blizz RTS like DoW guitar hero or whaever games that weirded me out, will bring them much money? Oh imagine the people who actually go to watch live where it's held. Gg WCG - it had shitty prizes last year too, it was already declining. There is BlizzCon and other events with big money and audience, forget wcg.

Someone said: "bad decision for samsung".
Samsung the company itself won't lose anything in this. Most likely they will save money which is why things are happening as they are. Its all about money!

#42 homesmasher 11 months ago
So much hate :o
#41 is right tho, samsung won't lose anything, if this is Kespa's doing then It's kinda childish, and they should rather focus on the buisniss perspective, seeing as this will propebly hurt Kespa if that's the case

As for blizzard, they will lose a little publicity, that's all, ofc this is bad, and if it turned out more tourni-hosts followed this lead then it would be catastrophical, but that won't be the case, so this won't really matter in the long run

Everybody should boycott WCG this year, including E-Sports coverage sites.

#44 sugawolf 11 months ago
i was there last year and the thought of no wc3 or SC is just ridiculous....... besides CS there will be nothing to watch if there are no blizzard games. for fuk sakes do people really want to watch some garbage like league of legends or tekken or some other trash.. i dont get it... the only logical thing to do is KEEP THE GAMES PEOPLE WANT TO WATCH/play .. moneyhungrywhores

#45 pn.berg_zerg 11 months ago
WCG is the only one who can lose there ;)
Event has become shittier each year after 2005 anyways ...
And i agree about the QLive thing.
No Quake Live in esports WCG is a joke.
But hey they got Carom3D Billiard and Guitar Hero + Trackmania

wtf

especially SC:BW ...

this is so BADDDDDDDDDDDDd

Samsung will lose in this too. They are sponsor of WCG, so if less people watch WCG, Samsung won´t have as much visibility.

#49 LRM)SpaNiarD (Junior GosuBet Manager SC2) 11 months ago
Completely agree with #48. They sponsor these events for gaining publicity and promotion, not for helping the scene... their objective is to get into the viewers of the event, so they are losing with this too

#50 DrAkAx 11 months ago
Intel should just step up and be the main sponsor. That or Samsung's worst competitor LG :) Although I would like Razer to step up, they are far from having the means of Samsung or Intel. Or just fire the idiot who took this decision at Samsung.
