MLG CEO resigns as founders feel they grow too fast

Posted by Patrik "Raistlin" Hellstrand 2 years ago

Matthew Bromberg, CEO of the professional video gaming league Major League Gaming (MLG), resigned from his position this week.

Reason is, reports VentureBeat.com, that a difference in how the company should grow. Bromberg was not in agreement with the founders' ambitions to grow more slowly.

- "That isn't in my nature, and was not my plan. We all agreed it was the best to find a new CEO to execute this strategy," said the four and a half year long CEO.

Founder Sindance DiGiovanni, founder and chief brand officer, will jump in as temporary CEO with a change of speed.

- "We had a recent board meeting with divergent opinions about the focus for the company," DiGiovanni said. "We are not changing the plan. It’s just a change in the velocity at which we are attempting to travel."

MLG has ran Pro Circuit events since 2002 and just recently announced that World of WarCraft will be on the 2010 PC Pro Circuit. A cash prize of $15,750 is thrown into the pool for the World of WarCraft Arena tournament.

So is this good or bad? I mean I'm afraid I don't know anything about this league.

MLG mainly consists of console gaming, however they do host a couple computer game stuff such as cs, dota, etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

MLG has always consisted of Halo at its forefront.

It has added other FPS's over the years but I think their line-up right now is:

* Halo 3
* Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)
* Tekken 6
* World of WarCraft

It's very much a US league for the most part as they have events over a season around the US and have fairly high production values, sponsors and prizes. Their open Halo tournaments always sell out their available spaces within minutes and that is pretty much their focus it seems.

I imagine this isn't the best move but I know Sunshine (the temp CEO) wants to do a lot more with the league (I know for a fact the Street Fighter community has been begging to be an official game but I think Capcom isn't cool with it).

As far as StarCraft though, I see this as the only true eSports outlet for it in the US, as it is the only league to have really survived in the US where other have faltered (CGS, WSVG, etc.) and would fit really well with MLG as they need NEED NEED an RTS game (Halo is fairly boring to watch IMO, but a lot of people obviously like it, so to each their own) and with the current good relationship between Blizzard/MLG I think SC2 has a good chance of showing up possibly later this season or next.

Slow growth (if its steady and substantial) should be good, depends on how risky the "quick growth" this guy advocated?
