GosuGamers and SteelSeries present HoN World Cup with $40,000 prize

Posted by Patrik "Raistlin" Hellstrand 1 year ago

In celebration of the launch of Heroes of Newerth and the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup, SteelSeries and GosuGamers are proud to present the SteelSeries HoN World Cup.

As players of national football teams around the world prepare for the premier competition in their sport, you can prepare for and take part in the premier competition of our very own eSport. The SteelSeries HoN World Cup boasts a whopping $40,000 prize pool, and offers chances to win cold hard cash for top competitive players, casual gamers, replay enthusiasts, and soccer fanatics alike.

No World Cup would be complete without spectacular coverage and commentary. So, in addition to the exciting launch of our HoN section on GosuGamers, we can announce that the one and only Toby "TobiWanKenobi" Dawson will be partnering up with Honcast.com as a guest on the live shoutcasts of the tournament’s most anticipated matches!

Each week Honcast will be taking votes from the GosuGamers community on the most popular match to shoutcast from a selection of that week’s most anticipated matches. Now without further ado, here are the details of the SteelSeries HoN World Cup.

HoN World Cup Format
Qualification
GosuGamers will be holding qualifiers for each of the 5 main regions:

- Southeast Asia Qualifier *
- Eastern European Qualifier
- Western Europe & Africa Qualifier
- North & South America Qualifier
- Asia, Oceania & Mixed Qualifier

* = Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines through Garena

Tournament registration will begin on May 19th and close on June 1st so don’t be late in registering!

Registration for the Southeast Asia Qualifier will be on a first-come, first-serve basis with a maximum of 128 teams composed of 5 members each. We will be receiving and distributing Closed Beta keys from Garena to those 128 teams so they can compete in the tournament once registration closes.

A select number of top teams from each qualifier tournament will be admitted to the Group Stage of 64. Each region’s number of qualification slots will depend on the proportion of registered teams that belong to that region and will be determined once registration ends, so help make sure that your region is well-represented to get the maximum amount of qualification slots!

Group stage
The 64 qualified teams will battle it out “World Cup-style” in 16 groups of 4 teams with a Bo1 format, and the top 2 teams of each group will advance to the next phase, the playoffs!

Playoffs
A bracket featuring the remaining 32 teams will give us the thrills, excitement and drama that only elimination playoffs can provide, and through the chaos we will crown the HoN World Cup Champions! The playoffs will be played in a double-elimination tournament bracket. Best of three (Bo3) for all rounds in the Winner Bracket, while the first two rounds of the Loser Bracket will be best of one (Bo1). All the rounds thereafter are best of tree (Bo3). The Grand Final is played best of five (Bo5) with the winning team starts up 1-0.

* = (Choice of Headset, Keyboard, Mouse and Mousepad)

5 SteelSeries Siberia v2 Headsets for each regional qualifiers winners will be handed out.

Some of you will realize that the total prizes outlined above fall just short of $40,000. Don’t worry, you will not be short-changed! In addition to the run-of-the-mill prizes awarded to the tournament’s standout performers, we will be awarding cash prizes to the winners of three fun side competitions!

SteelSeries Mousepad Design Contest
In addition to the upcoming announcement of their HoN-themed product line, SteelSeries will be offering GosuGamers members the chance to immortalize themselves on one of their custom HoN QCK mousepads. Registered members of the GosuGamers community will be able to submit their HoN concept artwork to SteelSeries and one lucky person’s fan art will be chosen! Full contest details will be announced soon on http://www.facebook.com/SteelSeries so become a fan and don’t miss out on this one time rare opportunity!

World Cup Pick'em
We know a lot of you are excited about the upcoming World Cup in South Africa, and there’s nothing more fun than supporting your nation or favorite team by picking it to win it all. Each participating team in the HoN World Cup will be asked to pick the nation that they think will win the 2010 FIFA World Cup this summer upon registration. The teams which correctly pick the World Cup Champions will automatically be entered into a random lottery in which one lucky team will win $1000!

2 additional community contests with prizes will be announced in the next few weeks, so stay tuned to GosuGamers.net for more information on upcoming events!

Tournament rules
A detailed list of the tournament rules and complete registration instructions will be announced in the next few days!

With 64 paying placements and ways for even the spectators and football hooligans to net some prizes, the SteelSeries HoN World Cup is certain to be a fun, memorable, and profitable celebration of the launch of Heroes of Newerth and this summer’s World Cup. So team up with your friends, prepare for the imminent Pandamonium, and follow the event on our new Heroes of Newerth section to find out which teams can bend it like Ophelia!

jeez, every pro-dota player just rages at everything HoN related. Well screw you guys for stealing from AoS, and if you dont know what AoS is you dont deserve to play dota. -.-

I actually plan on placing top 3 in this tournament, let's see how it goes ^^
The top DotA teams might wanna participate, it will sure be interesting to see them get eliminated by random HoN teams.

As Editor-in-Chief here on GosuGamers I can assure you that this will in no way affect the coverage of our other sections (DotA, StarCraft, WarCraft 3 or StarCraft 2), which means we will keep the same standards for DotA, and that this is just an addition to our current sections that gives our visitors a wider coverage.

It's important to us that you feel safe that our DotA section will be running like it always has, and we always have, and always will, try our best to improve the section.

And i really hope Maelk puts his money were his mouth is and joins the tourney and we can see how well Mym do (probs would get beaten by a scrub team in qualifiers if they dont train). Only noobs who cudnt make it in dota played HoN right so free monies for him he should give it a shot :p (Note: sarcasm b4 any1 thinks im flaming hon)

Gratz to Hon.

BUT, guess Gosugamers ignores the poll they did when S2 provided some money to them to include HoN. But well, that's the way things are going down.

and the fact that hon is such a skill-less game that only freaks who enjoy a game for the graphics and not the gameplay would enjoy.

@#22 Heroes of Newerth has some fun and fantastic gameplay. It seems a rather strange comment to say it requires no skill when quite a lot of the heroes from Dota were ported to Heroes of Newerth and many more heroes that were "skill based" added (vector targeting, missles like from potm arrow and the like).

Both games are good in their own right, people just get a sandy vagina because a lot was stolen from Dota. Even though if you think about it a lot of Dota was stolen from maps before it.

Hmm, so you make a poll, >60% vote against HoN on gosugamers and there it is now.
Expecting massive amounts of haters in whatever news presented here

AoS is an archetype, you can't steal that.
Anyway, nice prices! I'm still not a fan of HoN, but I guess you guys have the rights to your own tournaments and whatnot - hopefully the game will improve enough to justify it.

Well, you have to admit that #8 still points out the ASTONISHING similarity between the prize distribution though. And I don't believe in coincidence anyway.

What DotA earned itself through it's community and number of players (mymym, gosugamers, dreamhack, prize money, etc.), S2 buys with money.

I guess everybody has to judge for himself how to handle that (and think about what is going to last longer).

whatever you say. similar tournament, similar pricemoney split to attract as many people as possible, a groupstage - and ontop of that put it on the same space of time... coincidence? you think so? seems kind of lame to me though.

let's bet s2 guys paid more than steel series did for this tourny XDDD
wow, you guys waste money like nothing for a game that won't survive that much...
isn't it easier to improve your game and then you don't have to "buy" users with money? (shit you don't have icefrog for that, and you're simply aren't good enough to do it)

MY GOD THAT PEOPLE CAN GET SO BUTTHURT

you are seriously amazing, "omg they stolez" 1. they had permisson 2. dota is basically a mix of aos maps.

Grow the hell up, the only reason you can get pissed at this is because you are afraid its actually better than your precious fanboi game.

And btw awesome with new tourneys :)

#39 schila 1 year ago
I am always logged in :0

And i am raging at people who cant be happy for others, not like every hon player goes a-wall whenever a dota tourney is announced.

And when have they copied a "new hero", the latest copy is spectre or something in the lines. Cant exactly call him new.
About the tournament, it would be rather stupid to announce that you plan on including HoN in a tournament after the tournament started, not to mention the fact that the game is going retail tomorrow, so this creates some hype.

Lastly they(gosugamers) have said a million times that it wont affect the dota section, so why on earth are you bitching about it? If it doesnt affect you then why the fuck cant you just be happy for the people playing this game.

#40 s2pid_loser 1 year ago
omg why did u guys create HoN section
let this game slowly die since it eventually will
theyre hardly original

they jus wait to see what dota does and jus tries to do it one better, no creativity at all

"oh RGC is 30000 prize pool? lets do 40000 then"
"Oh icefrog create a new interesting hero, lets copy it, give it a new name and make it look different"

Blatant attempts at copying the better game. Meh. HoN will die out anyway when it comes out of beta/Icefrog finishes the new DotA with Valve.
#43 noreason 1 year ago
in sure most of the tards that come here to flame hon , dont even played more than 100 games , every dota player that plays hon also knows that you just need a "adaptation" time to the game , and after that , the game become awesome.

imo the only hon problem is the lack of dota ports.

#40
wtf are u saying , obviously hon will copy dota heroes , HON ITS DOTA SEMI-PORT out of wc3

I have no problem with marketing #31. I think HoN is a decent game actually (although very flawed still). And I don't even care too much that HoN copied DotA anymore.

But what I despise is S2 displaying how much they love DotA, and how they admire and appreciate what IceFrog did and still does. And THEN they do everything to steal as much as they can from DotA, not just the content, that's one thing they did in order to attract DotA players, but also the whole structure DotA built! Everything that DotA achieved S2 tries to buy/infiltrate just to replace DotA with their own copy of the game.

They buy into the DotA strongholds, they recruit exclussively from the DotA community almost, they do everything to hurt DotA and transfer players from it to HoN no matter the cost. They don't create a new player base, they don't help the genre. All it does is leeching on an existing community (again, look at prize distribution and date of this tournament).

I still think HoN is a decent game, I still believe that S2 really loves DotA and tried as good as they can to work on Hon (still issues).

But I loath, despise and hate what the guys who really run S2 decided to do in order to to sell their game. Everything they do aims at stealing from DotA while praising DotA at the same time, yet and all the ultimately can achieve is splitting the community although the majority of Hon players still likes DotA (naturally). This freaking two-facedness is pissing me off.

S2 and SteelSeries probably gave GosuGamers a hefty chunk of cash for this tournament though.

Grats to GosuGamers, get that money.

#48 Chairraider 1 year ago
And just to make this clear because I get sick and tired of posting it: S2 never had a permission to copy DotA.

All that that IceFrog ever said is that he has no problems with other games in the genre and he agreed on a heavily on DotA based game. LoL is heavily based on DotA (but different), but based on is NOT the same as copying.

Of course S2 says they had a "permission" in order to get players from DotA. Just use your brain, do you really believe IceFrog would actually tell someone who contacted him "ye, feel free to copy the terrain, a huge amount of our heroes, almost all items which I and the whole community have created over the course of x years"? Get real.
