The Cloud9 player went through four of his countrymen before besting Hoej in the grand finals.

Organized by VGVN and ONOG, the $15,000 Start Democracy invitation was set to promote equal rights for esports athletes across different disciplines. With 32 players in attendance, the line-up featured major Hearthstone stars and up-and-coming names from around the world, paired in a single elimination bracket.

After five rounds spread over three days, it was Cong “StrifeCro” Shu who took it home for the Americas. The Cloud9 player who’s been semi-active in 2016 and whose last tournament win was at the OGN Seoul Cup World Invitational in May, defeated Liquid bannerman David “Dog” Caero in the opening match and went through Jimmy “Ginge” Pendarvis, Muzahidul “Muzzy” Islam, Brian “Th3Rat” Courtade and finally Frederik “Hoej” Nielsen for a 3-2 in the closing match.

The tournament also ran an unorthodox format, a Last Hero Standing with a self-ban. The twist on the traditional method resulted in a heavily dominated Shaman meta, however, with the class getting multiple clean sweeps.

StrifeCro will bring home a third of the $15,000 prize pool, leaving Hoej with the second place prize of $3,000, while semi-finalists Sebastian “Xixo” Bentert and Th3Rat will bank $1,500 each.
