$220,000 confirmed as the prize pool for WCA 2015

The last major for the year will have a purse very close to that of Blizzcon.

Scheduled for December 16-21, the second edition of World Cyber Arena will be best chance for those players who didn’t make it to the world championship to earn big heaps of cash.

The prize pool for WCA 2015 was kept secret ever since the qualification process started in April. The qualifiers were spread over four regions – China, Americas, Europe and Asia – and featured both open and invitational portions. While the open qualifiers for Americas and the Wild Card tournament remain to be played, the majority of the player pool is already known. Big names of the western scene like Paul “Zalae” Nemeth, Jason “Amaz” Chan, Adrian “Lifecoach” Koy, Stanislav Cifka, Aleksandr “Kolento” Malsh and Petar “Gaara” Stevanovic will clash with the best that the east has to offer. On the spearhead of the Asian regions are honed competitors like Zhang “Lovelychook” Bohan, Lan “Neilyo” Tran, Qin “Season” Anping and more.

With players hailing from all around the world WCA 2015 is expected to be the last true international pit fight for the year, second only to Blizzcon in terms of region diversity and prize pool. 1,4 million RMB is confirmed as the total purse, or approximately $219,400.

This is an increase of $25,000 compared to the $195,000 of last year’s WCA. Held in early October 2014, the previous edition of the tournament saw an all-Chinese grand final – region’s first and still only big victory over the west since – with Li “LiBo” Bo emerging victorious over to-be Blizzcon runner-up and DreamHack champion Xieyu “TiddlerCelestial” Wang.

WCA 2014 also came under heavy criticism due to the format of choice, featuring Bo3 matches with blind picks. This year, however, the organizers have chosen to go for the much safer Conquest, and although LAN events of the west are currently leaning towards the use of Last Hero Standing, WCA will not follow suit.
