GOMTV GSL: Battle Report - Group C

It is tough to have an solid, definitive impression on the matches described below and the group as a whole. On one hand we had The Emperor, who once again proved to us that he is absolutely brilliant at StarCraft and can browbeat his opponents as hard as he wants. On the other hand, the group itself was not as impressive as, say, B, D or F. And, we had to see Hyperdub battle HongUn twice to see who advances to the next stage.

Game 1 - oGsTheWind vs HongUnPrime - Xel'Naga Caverns

HongUn opened with extremely quick Nexus, followed by Cannons. TheWind, who went for Pool before gas now was slightly behind economically but decided not to go for all-ins and instead teched to +1 Hydralisks. After spotting HongUn’s Blink build, the Zerg immediately threw down a Infestation Pit and some more Hatcheries in hope to stop the ever-growing Stalker army. The problem with Hydras, though, is that they melt to Colossi and HongUn knew that and responded with a nice tech transition. Poor, eager engagement from TheWind’s side, however, ruined the game for him as he pushed the Protoss natural straight through the Colossi lasers and his entire army evaporated. The Zerg lost the game soon thereafter.

4/10

Nice build responses from TheWind but awful control of his armies and no pressure attempts whatsoever which is what you need when you have that many Hydras.

Game 2 - SlayerS_BoxeR Vs. oGsHyperdub - Shakuras Plateau

Both players opened quite passively, going for relatively quick CCs. From that point on, Hyperdub went for a standard Tank/Viking build while The Emperor opted for a Cloak Banshee harass but all three of his fliers got taken out with just one scan for each. Fortunately, a funny engagement happened couple of minutes later when two pairs of fully loaded Medivacs passed each other at the bottom of the map… With lightning reflexes, Boxer unloaded everything and managed to take both enemy Medvacs including the Marines inside them. Knowing that he is far ahead, Boxer did an elevation push that absolutely crippled Hyperdub. And to be even more abusive of his advantage, The Emperor just threw… five orbitals, calling down sick amount of MULEs. Hyperdub’s economy was about three times behind and after couple more engagements he fell to the Emperor, who was now upgrading BCs out of two Cores…

8/10

Normally, I wouldn’t give such a one-sided game a rate so high, but this one had its hilarious moments. The Medivac meeting, the mass Orbitals and the seven Starports at the end that did not produce anything were plus the MULE drops were so insultingly funny that I should probably rate the game even higher…

Game 3 - HongUnPrime Vs. oGsHyperdub - Shakuras Plateau

Another macro game was played, this time with HongUn and Hyperdub doing mirror builds on Shakuras (if you put an equal side between Raxes and Gates). Hyperdub, however, was a bit bolder and took an extremely quick third. HongUn’s plan to battle this was a double Forge Blink build with a transition to Storm and Chargelots. The game was dull and boring until around the 17th minute when the first engagement occurred. Hyperdub, who had the time to add some Ghosts to his army, opened with a perfect EMP, depleting most of HongUn’s Templars and easily won that first battle. Few more battles occurred as game’s tempo picked up and Hyperdub continued to come on top, harassing Protoss expansions and killing units here and there. Eventually, the Terran was so far ahead that he just steamrolled over his opponent.

7/10

Nice action packed game with lots of multitasking, drops, storms, snipes, EMPs and battles.

Game 4 - SlayerS_BoxeR Vs. oGsTheWind - Metalopolis

Boxer opened with double proxy Rax positioned at his gold, opting to do some heavy Marine/SCV aggression. However, TheWind’s position across the whole map was favorable for him and he managed to erect a Spine Crawler and spawn enough Lings to deflect the pressure. And all was steady for a while until Boxer decided that he must conquer TheWind’s third at all costs. Several battles broke off at that place but TheWind showed that he has incredible defensive skills and managed to save his Hatchery times and times again with Banelings, Mutas, Roaches and Lings. However, although he couldn’t kill the third, Boxer had now taken a gold expansion and was ahead of the Zerg economically, who was nowhere near to expanding to a fourth. And the next push from Boxer did what he wanted all over – kill Zerg’s third and even take another base of his own. Starving for resources, TheWind did a desperate attack at Boxer’s gold Planetary but failed to do anything and wasted even more units. He was dead some minutes later.

6/10

Nice defense from TheWind overall, but he was completely outclassed by the Terran legend.

Game 5 - oGsHyperdub Vs. HongUnPrime - Delta Quadrant

Knowing that Delta Quadrant is not the best map for PvT, HongUn decided to do some heavy 1-base all-in and opened with 3-Gate Stargate and set camp at the bottom of Hyperdub’s ramp. The Terran, on the other hand, managed to spot the tech with a lucky Hellion and started Bunkering up, knowing that all he has to do is survive until he hits a critical Marine count. But HongUn’s Void Rays continued to grow and when he reached five he moved in for a kill attempt. But poor control cost him the game there and then as he mismicroed the Rays straight into the Bunker, who hurt them a great deal, enough for Hyperdub to stim, go down his ramp and clean the Protoss oppression and winning the game.

6/10

The game was tense at times and the mass VR strat could’ve gone differently had Hong microed more carefully.
