Summer’s Rift wins WCA America, advances to main event in China

Despite having suffered (what was truly) a disappointing loss in the final round of the TI5 American Open Qualifier, Summer’s Rift has managed to find success elsewhere by securing the top spot in the Pro American division of World Cyber Arena 2015.

The bracket for the tournament itself was one of single elimination: each quarter and semi-final round was settled with a best-of-three matchup, leaving the grand finalists to face off in a traditional best-of-five series. Rift earned entry into the final round with style, shutting down NAR (the second place finisher in TI5's American Qualifier) two games to none in the semi-finals. The grand finals were held at the ESL Studios in Burbank, California, with Rift’s opponent being the Peruvian squad Not Today. The series itself went decidedly in favor of Rift. They employed the age-old Tiny-Wisp combo to secure the first game in a mere twenty minutes. Despite going on to drop Game 2, they proved victorious in both of the following matches, ultimately taking the series with a final score of three games to one.

Rift’s first place finish earned them a whopping $50,000. More importantly, however, it secured them a spot in the WCA 2015 main event, which is slated to begin in China sometime this December. Not Today’s second place finish saw them walk away with $20,000 and a second chance at the main event in the form of an invite to the American Open Qualifiers (to be held at PAX Prime in Seattle, Washington).
