Valve confirm LAN mode for DOTA2

Posted by Patrik "Raistlin" Hellstrand 3 months ago

Valve's Market Director of Operations, Erik Johnson, assures the DOTA2 gamers that there will be LAN mode for the game. The interview also touches base on the upcoming The International #2 on how they aim for everyone to be able to view the games live inside the game.

The LAN mode announcement comes as manna from the sky for the Southeast Asian and Chinese community in their battle against the recurring ping issues. Johnson says that there are some systems that LAN mode requires that they haven't finished yet as their main focus has been on matchmaking, but that it will definitely be included.

Valve are also working actively on solving the challenges of the Chinese scene sticking to WarCraft 3's DotA.

- "China is the largest Dota audience in the world, and we want to make sure that they, like everyone else, are there as Dota moves forward," says Erik Johnson to joinDOTA.com.

"A goal of everyone being able to view the matches live inside the game"
He further assesses the problem of inadequate server capacity which, according to him, is the gating factor on getting everyone playing Dota 2 right now. Erik Johnson does reveal that their release date is not tied to the upcoming The International, but that they do have a goal of everyone being able to view the matches live inside the game which might which might signal towards a discontinued partnership with last year's streaming partner own3D.tv.

No finalized business model - free to play still up in the open
When equired upon the recent screenshots showing in-game stores in DOTA2, Erik Johnson could not comment on anything other than "we are still working it" on whether it was just a cosmetic option or a path to finance what would probably be a free to play game.

"[The International] doesn't preclude us from participating in smaller events throughout the year"
As a given, Valve will be looking at improving their The International from last year.

- "We all had huge lists of things coming out of the event that we thought we could improve upon this year, and we're all really excited to see how it plays out," says Johnson.

As for expanding to more leagues and competitions, Valve have a lot of ideas and state that the two are not mutually exclusive, but that as of now their focus is only on The International.

- "We don't think the two are mutually exclusive, so while we are going to host a large event each year with the best teams from around the world, that doesn't preclude us from participating in smaller events throughout the year," says Johnson.

Exciting stuff, although it doesn't directly affect a lot of people who would play it and participate in "LAN" events in Europe (but on the local servers), it will definitely provide a big boost to the SEA/China scene.

I think it's insane that the gaming industry has come to a point where LAN is a special feature that they gain positive PR from for announing... It should be mandatory. >_<

If it's for a huge prizepool like $1.6mil+ i'm sure the chinese will be there especially since Valve cover the costs (assuming they qualify/get invited).

I imagine there will be an asian qualifier, maybe even a specific one to china.

The main problem why Chinese dont play DotA 2 because DotA 2 has higher system requirement than DotA,LoL and HoN.In China ppl dont have enough money or time to upgrade thier coms,DotA 2 looks great in high quality but in low quality, its still spike and awful. Most ppl dont play DotA 2 because most of them dont have a dream com to play this game.

Great news, LAN is really important actually. I've grown very tired of Blizzard lately, they are completely out of touch with the community, go Valve!

#28 Dota 2 runs very smoothly on my oldest computer which I bought for 300 euro about 2 years ago ... System requirements arent that big to play Dota2 imo.

Valve makes the right move by adding LAN. Eat that Blizzard.

I bet this LAN mode just the same as Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike, HalfLife : Deathmatch and Left 4 Dead series already got.
The ability to host your own games, and configure your own server with multiple addons. You have to login to Steam client just to play LAN mode.

LOL

#26 I highly disagree with that, you don't need high end computer to run dota 2, most cyber cafe will provide decent computer to run Chinese MMO games which have good graphics and I think after the optimization and open beta most cyber cafe who care about their business and want to take advantage of dota 2 will surely upgrade their computers.

#37: Yeah I bet you also have to start the game before you can play it :( (Find the sarcasm)

Valve shows once again, that the community has to go first, to make a product appealing for the consumer. (Should be self-evident, but still the majority of the game companys moves away from that with the discuss "defense against piracy")
I see a bright future for Valve. (I hope it works out with china, too :) )

Pro players can affort that but if u want a game to live 4ever as a lengend,it must be popular,u dont want DotA 2 to end up like Starcraft 1-only played by Gosu in Korean play it for living,Asia is not like EU or America, most of its countries still refuse to admit that ESport is a sport and only discuss about how bad it is.Of course, many cyber cafe can run it in high res but what would u choose, play a game in cyber cafe or at home?
#28
U bought ur com 2 years ago for 300 euro, cant compare to many players who bought thier 5-6 years ago,and most of them can be able to buy it because their parents buy them for studying and learning.
DotA 2 still has many fans but as u can see, most players come from Eu or America, when Chinese dominate DotA 2,they change to orther game not because its bad,its because the graphic is like 12 years ago(Would u play a low sys req games on ur com if u can play a lot more games similiar to it with higher graphic?).
P\s:Still a big Valve fan right now!!
