Market research firm: Digital sales > retail

The market research firm "The NPD" claims that PC game digital sales for the first half of 2010 have outgrown retail in the US.

Digital sales in the US reached 11.2 million units while boxed sales summed up to a tal of 8.2 million. This at the same time as the PC revenues declined 21 per cent and unit sales 14 per cent, according to NPD.

GamesIndustry.biz reports, however, that the firm who controlled the research does not have access to download services' sales figure after getting in touch with both Steam and Blizzard Entertainment.

Albeit, the numbers are based on "weighted and projected" consumer surveys to draw up a list to narrow down "the most successful download services"

NPD analyst Anita Frazier, says that stats from the latest report shows that it was Steam and Big Fish Games who increased sales the highest.

- "One major finding from this latest report is that the 'big got bigger' in the first half of 2010, with both Steam and Bigfish capturing a bigger share of full-game PC games digital download sales than they did last year," said Anita Frazier.

- "The overall decline of PC games when combining sales via both digital downloads and physical retail sales is impacted by the expansion of social network gaming as well as the continued expansion of free game optins," she said.

Discuss: Do you tend to buy more digital games or are you still a box man?
