ROCCAT DotA GosuCup: Groupstage I Round 3 Battle Report

With the second groupstage upcoming, it might be a good idea to read up and remember what happened previously. All results and a summary from the last round can be found below.

Group A: Replays
TeamGWDLPts
Brazil paiN31205
Europe BP31205
United States VT31205
Thailand ROCCAT.Tr30030
The remaining match between Browned Potatoes an paiN, has a bit of history on its back. One may remember the MYM Prime Defeding 12 playoff games, which were stamped by host discussions and argumentations. BP won the series two to one and a new little rivalry was born.

Hence, we saw the rematch in the last round and paiN seemed to be fully motivated. Their disable-heavy draft featuring four stunners didn't leave BP a lot of room to maneouver early on. With three deaths onto the Drow Ranger and her guradians not doing much better, the trilane on bottom was lost quickly. Santa with his Clockwerk did very well however and sent the opposing Medusa on a holiday quite a few times as well. Despite BP shortening the kill difference to eight after a won fight, the Lion from Sune became the disrupting force, everyone should fear when played solo mid. A drop from Santa didn't help the situation either, as paiN continuted to kill heroes and took a rather onesided game in about 60 minutes.

With the rematch and last game of the group upcoming, this encounter decided between a three-way tiebreaker and the qualification of paiN and vT. The Brazilians stuck to the offensive playstyle from last game and picked up four casters with a hard carry for assurance. The Drow Ranger turned out to be a mis-pick however, completing a lineup, which should later get in trouble against the intense pushes from BP. Ducky's offensive Chen, which was a brilliant pick as well, focused heavily on heal and summons. S0ny4ce only barely able to carry in game one, did his job very well and filled the tank role, while BabyKnight dealt the damage.

Despite paiN fighting heavily, the hero disadvantage was gamebreaking and made them lose, which forced both teams and vT into a tiebreaker series. Game one between BP and paiN is highly recommended, featuring the in Europe lesser popular Slayer and Beastmaster in the Brazilian lineup. It was paiN who finished first, winning both their games, followed by BP with one victory.

The best impression came from Brazil in this group as paiN gaming proved, that a slightly different, though not lesser competitive, drafting style can withstand a competition on European hostbots. BP showed solid performances and justified their advancement as well. Both teams will meet again in the second Groupstage as the drawing decided.
Group B: Replays
TeamGWDLPts
Ukraine Na`Vi32107
Other MYM31205
France Virus31114
Poland inF30030
One deciding match was left to play in group B. While a draw would be enough for MYM, Virus needed three points to advance. It was a slow paced game at first, though the huge pushing potential in the French lineup earned them five towers before the twenty-minute-mark. Converted creeps by an Enchantress, Lava spawns and Netherblasts rained down on the Danes, who showed their team work ability nontheless and came close to a two-kill-difference after several well-fought battles. The 8-1-4 Morphling by ThePlaymatE was about to get imbalanced, when Virus set up an immediate push and cought MYM off guard. Their huge spellpower combined with early pipes and scepters through the tower gold was enough to take this game. One more win and the surprise is perfect!

Entering the second game, advantages were hard to spot. The adventurous Kotl-DK formation on mid, didn't seem to bother MYM's Necrolyte too much. Great plays came from DeMoN as Visage, backing up several kills with great micro. As the laning phase endet, the game became extremely onesided, due to better farmed heroes on MYM. With Mekansm, Shivas Guard and Vanguard on ThePlaymatE, his Necrolyte reached immortality after thirty minutes. Man of the match is DeMoN however, as he took part in phenomenal 32 out of 35 kills. The throne fell after fourty minutes, giving MYM an essential point-advantage in the group.

The favourites fulfilled their duties, though Virus showed that they are not far behind and always good for causing headaches. The advancement from Na´Vi was never endangered however and MYM have proven themselves as well. Both teams will fight in different groups this time.
Group C: Replays
TeamGWDLPts
Russia DTS32107
Netherlands GoD30303
Russia TR30212
Denmark NE30212
Heading towards the third round in group C, the initial situation was more than complicated. As GoD started out with one point more than both NE and TR, a win versus DTS, who are already qualified would be enough. In case of NE and TR drawing, one point would last for the Dutchmen.

Starting out were TR and NE in two onesided games. Onesided in favour of both teams however, as the Russians steamrolled NE after 23 minutes power play. Heal and nuke were the ingredients, which made the offensive playstyle so successful. Good Beastmaster play, enabled TR to set up targeted ganks and push a field tower right afterwards in superior number.

The fast loss didnt seem to bother NE too much, although TR tried to continue right where they stopped in game one. Their aggresive draft didnt work out this time however, as the laning situation clearly favoured the Danes. A lot of unorthodox risks were taken by the Russians as well, entering fights at bad points and chasing long for insecure kills. TR walked into the trap several times and made NE build up an advantage, big enough to maintain control and win the game.

This leaves all eyes on GoD, who would advance in case of a draw against DTS. But the first game didnt open up a lot of perspectives for Deadmage and co. DTS played the schoolmaster early on, laning an unconventional Omniknight on top. Throughout the game GoD found themselves outplayed several times, given the high amount of disabling spells in the opposing team and a strong Dread who took the role of the healer in fights. As close to all essential fights were lost, the game ended shortly after thirty minutes, leaving the GoD's with just one opportunity to avoid a tiebreaker series.

It was Dreads turn on the picks in game two and what he chose seemed to suit his impression of entertaining DotA quite well. Having picked two massive casters straight into a Doom Bringer from Deadmage (who he chose beforehand), the intermediate DTS captain crowned his draft with a roaming Bounty Hunter, played by himself. The unconventional lineups affected the game highly, giving the watchers a lot of kills and fights to enjoy. While the aggressive lineup worked out very well at first, the longer the game got, the wider GoD's perspectives became. After the Doom Bringer from Muga obtained his Pipe, the tides turned and all lanes got pushed back. After sacrificially fought battles from both teams, the higher end game potential in GoD's lineup secured the desired win and a slot in the second groupstage.

All teams evinced interest to advance in group C and besides DTS who played in an upper class, all matches were even. It was GoD who made the cut in the end, taking one point off the leader in the most essential match, which the group saved until the end.
Group D: Replays
TeamGWDLPts
Europe GGnet32107
Greece EnDs31205
Sweden FEARZ31114
Serbia Kw.rs30030
As Kw dropped their last game against GGnet by default, Puppey and co had four points safe and needed to play FEARZ for a slot in Groupstage II.

The Swedes had to play EnDs beforehand however, in order to put themselves in a better position before the last encounter. The first game was dry and rather unemotional to watch. Stamped by a lot of farming, both Sniper and Doom Bringer by FEARZ and Invoker and Naix from EnDs accumulated a lot of gold. Kills fell only in small skirmishes or successful ganks. A big teamfight at the roshan pit marked the highlight of the game and determined the winner. Shortly afterwards, the Sniper from Wall, who survived all fights and picked up the Aegies, becaeme too hard to kill, which sealed the game in the end.

Game two entertained its watchers a lot more, providing a dream start from EnDs with a quickly won midlane. The kill difference was close to ten, when FEARZ gained back momentum. Key figures in this endeavor were Loda as Queen of Pain and Bentzer as Razor, who picked up several kills, without any response-damage for the team. As the AEO nukes from EnDs got maxed out, teamfights became harder and harder to win. The scoreboard showed 19-17 in favour of EnDs, though several key items like Dagger and HoD on the Batrider or a BKB on Shadow Fiend displayed the Greek advantage. After several push attempts, the Swedish defence broke down and EnDs won the game. Would FEARZ achieve a draw against GGnet in their last game, the groups would have gone into a tiebreaker series.

And the Swedes had a hard first game in front of them. As Puppey pulled an offensive lineup with Chen and Beastmaster out of his hat, FEARZ was left with a small room to breath. Whenever a creep wave hit a tower, Puppey and his creeps were there to increase the damage. Supported by the attack speed aura from Pajkatt, the Sentinels heroes had to stay passive most of the time. Despite showing nice TP support, which earned them a alot of kills, GGnet never lost momentum. As one won teamfight enabled the GG home team to take at least one tower, FEARZ were forced to choose their opportunities wisely. The nice team play from the Swedes didnt make a difference, after GGnet assembled their forces once again at 32 minutes replay time. Once the first opposing heroes bit the dust, all Baracks were open and the game was won.

As GGnet only had four points before this match as well, this game decided between tiebreakers and the advancement of GGnet and EnDs. The show didnt go down as spectacular as the situation would have deserved however. Pajkatt on his key hero Invoker pulled out all the stops and turned seemingly lost battles. Great support was deliverd by Miracle as Crystal Maiden, being involved in the most kills among all team mates. Despite some nice Shadow Fiend play from Loda, the performance of FEARZ was no challenge this time and lead to a fast loss.

These happenings bring EnDs and GGnet into the next groupstage. Although the distance to FEARZ was not big at all, EnDs suprised and impressed with great team chemistry and will carry the Greek flag for three more weeks in the ROCCAT DotA GosuCup #3.
