WCS NA Weekly: The top 5 games of Week 2

Everything about WCS America S3 in one place

MacSed vs Hwangsin on Whirlwind

Why was it good: China goes against Korea in a heavy PvP macro game.

It's a battle for surival in Group C of WCS America Season 3 between MacSed and Hwangsin. After their initial losses to Goswser and SEn, respectively, the two Asian players are tossed against each other on the macro-friendly Whirlwind and madness ensues. After the initial punches, Hwangsin goes for the tempest tech while MacSed stays on the ground and builds a powerful colossus/archon army. The tention grows before the two armies finally clash in a concerto of blue and yellow lasers.

HerO vs Heart on Whirlwind

Why was it good: HerO gives a lecture on how to stay alive against unrelenting Terran aggression.

A series of medivac drops and multipronged attacks give Heart a supply advantage in the mid game and the Terran uses this to bash on HerO even more. Gunfire raining from all sides, HerO is forced to defend everywhere and with smaller army to that. Though he sees his units spread almost too thing, the Liquid Protoss manages to resist Heart at his main, his third and in the open spaces of Whirlwind, eventually erasing the dangerous supply gap.

Sage vs Revival on Bel'Shir Vestige

Why was it good: Sage is always on the move with his flotilla, utilizing to the maximum the power of the Phoen

Skytoss is not exactly rare in ZvP these days but Sage manages to take his Phoenixes one step further. Hovering around Bel'Shir Vestige without a moments rest, the Protoss air force successfully scouts, terrorizes and opposes the Zerg swarm, weakening it just enough that his ground army at home can safely defend the offensive attempts of Revival and squash it under its firepower later in the game.

Neeb vs Heart on Akilon Wastes

Why was it good: Down one game against the Korean powerhouse, Neeb tries to stay alive in the series and picks a great fight on Akilon Wastes. After the two players trade armies for some minutes, the game is then reduced to a base race where every building is precious.

It's not often that we see an American player give heart opposition to a Korean but Neeb plays this game on Akilon Wastes beautifully. Neeb takes the supply advantage after Heart botches an engagement around the 17th minute mark and then masterfully executes the follow-up base race to tie the series and stay in the booth for one more game.

Polt vs Sage on Whirlwind

Why was it the best: Polt takes Neeb's idea of a base race and multiplies it grandeur. Several times.

By minute 19, Polt is in trouble. Sage's death ball has hit his third, left his army in shambles, eliminated his viking count. A quick glimpse at the minimap shows how the Protoss is on four bases compared to Terran's two.

But that's only half the story and a more careful read shows Polt's ace in the sleeve. During all these events, a marauder party is ravaging Sage's main, making the trade more even than it initially looks. From there, Polt takes Sage on a long rollercoaster of humiliation, dropping and attacking him everywhere. As buildings start falling on both sides, the champion of America starts to snowball into dominating position.
