Sweden versus UK

The very first match in ClanBase's Starcraft Nations Cup - and the first match for Team Sweden for a while - was kicked off at 22.00 CET yesterday. We had luckily - and surprisingly - a very good lineup for this match and with the new co-manager of the Swedish team, Raistlin, the administration was better than before. We also used ventrilo during it all in order to make it less messy and problematic with who joining what games, playing which opponent, saving replays etcetera. We also started to inform the Swedish players about this match more than a week ago, so we didn't have to be there five minutes before the game was about to begin, wondering who would show up and if everyone who promised to show up would be there.

So for Sweden Sweden this time, everyone was reliable and showed up exactly on time for the event and started playing when they we're commanded to. Still, we miss a few replays but that's not of any big importance, hopefully.

United Kingdom United Kingdom, on the other hand, had a hard time getting their players to show up. MidiaN did his best to get five players to join the channel even though he was very close to canceling the match just before it all began.

Let's move on into the battle reports - not to publish any results yet. Written by sG-editor (and SWE Co-manager), Raistlin:
KaaZ[SWE] vs. hN)HaSuGuRuPlayers: Sweden KaaZ[SWE], United Kingdom hN)HaSuGuRu
Map(s): The Lost Temple

kaazvshasuguru1.jpgThe first game starred the newest member of Team SWE; KaaZ. He stood up against the English player HaSuGuRU at The Lost Temple. KaaZ spawns at '3 o clock while HaSuGuRu spawns at '6. The English zerg starts with an early spawning pool, intending to outrush KaaZ. But KaaZ manages to keep him to stay away, since he makes some Zerglings of his own. The players have kind of the exact same build order, Extractor -> Spawning Pool -> Lair -> Spire. But when the spires have popped out of their cocoons, you see some difference. KaaZ goes 5 mutas straight away, while HaSuGuRu spawn scourges. The Guru goes off by killing an overlord with two of his scourges, but when KaaZ's mutalisks are out, there's no question of who's gonna win this game. First he kills off Guru's overlords, then he destroys Guru's beginning of an exp. After that it's finito.

kaazvshasuguru2.jpgThe second game, also played at The Lost Temple gives you a different game type, but still the same matchup. KaaZ goes the same, teching to an early spire, while HaSuGuRu goes mass Zerglings and orders some drones to build some spore colonies. The Guru also takes his natural expansion, gaining an economic advantage. The Guru then wants to try his luck, and sends his zerglings with their claws advancing towards KaaZ's ramp. Guru has alot of Zerglings, but as KaaZ has both Mutalisks and Zerglings, along with some scourges, he evades this attack pretty well. After this mistake from The Guru, KaaZ can easily take out his expansion, to win the game. Nice start for the new recruit.

Sweden Sweden - United Kingdom United Kingdom 1-0 (2-0)

WhiZ[SWE] vs. iD.MidiaNPlayers: Sweden WhiZ[SWE], United Kingdom iD.MidiaN
Map(s): The Lost Temple

whizvsmidian1.jpgWhiZ took the quest of facing probably the best English player in tonight's lineup; iD.MidiaN, also the captain of the UK team. WhiZ is located at '6 as protoss, when MidiaN has spawned his hatchery at '12 o clock. MidiaN starts with an Extractor and a spawning pool, while WhiZ warps in two gateways; standard PvZ. When his gateways are done, WhiZ starts pumping zealots, while MidiaN is expanding at his natural, and goes for zerglings and a Lair. With curiousity in what the Swedish protoss executor is thinking, MidiaN sneaks in with several zerglings in WhiZ's base. After minutes of harass in WhiZ's base, he flips over to the offensive side. With a group of Zealots and two or three Archons, he invites MidiaN to a battle of mayhem; where the zerg swarm comes out as the winner. After WhiZ losing this many zealots, MidiaN clearly has the advantage. He is on his way of popping out some mutalisks when WhiZ is doing all he can merging Archons to stop this. Clearly, there weren't enough templars to aid WhiZ in the battle of The Lost Temple, because his expansion gets killed by Mutalisks and Zerglings, with some lurkers in the back, just in case. Ouch.

whizvsmidian2.jpgApparently, the battle of Lost Temple wasn't a closed chapter yet, as we see WhiZ warping in at '12, and MidiaN at '6 o clock. In the start, MidiaN goes for a hatchery next to his original one; as WhiZ warps in two gateways after the first pylon is done. MidiaN; building a lot of Zerglings as he's upgrading to Lair, got a couple of WhiZ's Zealots blocking his ramp. When enough Zealots are outside the Zerg's base, WhiZ once again opens with a Zealot attack. This time it doesn't work out that good either; MidiaN's zerglings can quite easy take out the zealous warriors. Once again, WhiZ has lost a lot of zealots. During this attack, WhiZ has teched up to Templars of Archives and is on his way of warping in a Robotics Facility. What has MidiaN to counter with? Three eggs are located at his ramp, and are soon evolved into Lurkers. As soon as the lurkers are done, it's Midian's turn to hit the attack button. With a bunch of zerglings and three lurkers, MidiaN manages to break in and destroy WhiZ's defense at the ramp, and manages to kill some probes as well. But WhiZ has both observers and dark templars, so he can handle the attack with care. At the end of the attack, WhiZ has also gotten himself a mechanical worm called a Reaver. In the meantime at the home of the swarm, MidiaN's starts to spawn Mutalisks. Air defense is something that WhiZ barely has, so MidiaN easily takes out his nexus. Loss for WhiZ.

Sweden Sweden - United Kingdom United Kingdom 1-1 (2-2)

MoZ[SWE] vs. McCoY-Players: Sweden MoZ[SWE], United Kingdom McCoY-
Map(s): The Lost Temple, Nostalgia

mozvsmccoy1.jpgMoZ, our stand in for this game, stood up against McCoY, first map was Lost Temple, as every first game was meant to be played on. The Zerg MoZ starts at '3, while McCoY is '6 o clock as Protoss. MoZ does the extractor trick, allowing him one more drone, an overlord pops out, and then a hatchery at his natural is being morphed. Over at McCoy's (man, that sounds like a pub) two gateways are being warped in near his ramp.
When McCoy's first zealot is out, he ignites his warp blades, and is ready for battle. McCoY sends him to MoZ, who has just finished his expansion, and is adding a sunken or two. MoZ, now with a sturdy economy and some defense, is now upgrading to Lair and is morphing up another hatchery in his main. The Englishman starts constructing an expansion, as he has a dozen of zealots. MoZ has by now researched the lurker ability, and all the overlord upgrades. So without any delay, MoZ sends out his troops to kill off the zealots located outside his natural - making McCoY retreat. MoZ also unloads a bunch of zerglings in the protoss' base, killing off his pylon that gave power to four gateways. But not more than that happened in the drop, because MoZ fled right after the kill-pylon operation. MoZ also has a swarm of zerglings and some lurkers outside McCoY's natural. After some taunting, the swarm of zerglings and lurkers invades the brave protoss expansion. GG, see you in the second game.

mozvsmccoy2.jpgHere we stand on Nostalgia, a place full of caves, ramps and carcasses of dead animals. MoZ is located at upper left, while McCoy is bottom left. MoZ goes fast expansion, and McCoy goes gateway -> Cybernetics Core. MoZ expands once again, this time at '12, going for stable economy this time as well.
With a corsair, McCoY checks MoZ's base and also locates his expansion at '12. He throws up two more gateways, while MoZ has a lair and researching lurker aspect once again, as he did last game. Will this be the same game type, or will we see something new? Kind of. After a failed attack at MoZ's expansion, McCoy has the disadvantage. MoZ moves his zerglings and newly morphed lurkers to McCoY's choke, pushing him so he can't get out. With a stable lurker/zergling/sunken push, MoZ can easily take care of the last attack from McCoY. 2-0 to MoZ, good work!

Sweden Sweden - United Kingdom United Kingdom 2-1 (4-2)

Xodiac[SWE] vs nurosPlayers: Sweden Xodiac[SWE], United Kingdom nuros.
Map(s): The Lost Temple, Plains to Hill Desert

xodvsnuros1.jpgXodiac's game versus Nuros was an intense and long fight. The arena was Lost Temple and Xodiac was terran at '12 o clock, and Nuros was '3 Protoss. It started as any other standard TvsP game, dragoons trying to break into the terran base; but with repairing - no worries. As the game went on, Nuros had a pack of carriers versus Xodiac's goliaths. They both had their share of expansions, one island exp each. With many ups and downs, nuros finally won the first game. The game was indeed a long one - 58 minutes and 59 seconds.

The second game was a Zerg versus Protoss game on Plains to Hills Desert - good to have some other games than Lost Temple maps. Anyway, we've got Xodiac as Zerg bottom left, and nuros as Protoss upper right. The protoss goes dual gateways at his choke, while Xodiac goes Hatchery and a spawning pool. xodvsnuros2.jpgAfter some zerglings are hatched, Xodiac sends his zerglings to destroy the wall-in at nuros's choke. It works pretty well - one gateway and a photon cannon. But nuros knows what he's doing, he has set up his zealots so the zerglings can't get out - making Xodiac retreat with his tail between his legs. Xodiac now has a dual expansion (both with vespene geysers) while nuros has none. The scenario right now is zealots/templars versus newly hatched hydralisks attacking nuros main yet another time. With a well placed Psi Storm, nuros manages to keep xodiac out of his base. With some pushes here and there from both players, it looks pretty even, which is until Xodiac brings out the humongous Ultralisks. The Kaiser Blades rips the Protoss army to shreds, forcing nuros to let out a 'GG' and admit defeat.

The third and final game had no observers, and none of the players saved the game, so I'll just tell you that nuros won the game.

Sweden Sweden - United Kingdom United Kingdom 2-2 (5-4)
Daaman[SWE] vs hN)jJuNnToSsPlayers: Sweden Daaman[SWE], United Kingdom hN)jJuNnToSs.
Map(s): The Lost Temple, Nostalgia

daamanvsjun1.jpgDaaman starts off with dual factories located at '3 o clock, supported with a barrack-supply depot wall-in. jJuNnToSs (called Jun from now) has got a gateway up and running - training dragoons. He also has a Robotics Facility who's building observers. Both players start to expand early on - at the same time, at their naturals. Daaman does a cliff drop at Jun's natural, but Jun is aware of that, and sends a shuttle full of zealots to deal with the tanks. Jun has got six gateways by now, and is starting on his mineral only expansion. Daaman is the owner of six factories, pumping out tanks and vultures.
Second time's a charm? Well, Daaman does another cliff drop, attempting to blow it out of the air. With vultures, SCV's and tanks, he manages to keep up with Jun's drops - the humans are there to stay.
Both players have by now a lot of troops. The protoss player (Jun) got hot on the oatmeal and launched his units towards Daaman's 'Factory Salad'. Daaman could without difficulty defend himself towards that attack, so now Daaman has clearly the advantage. With another cliff drop (including ghosts, goliaths and tanks) at another of Jun's expansions, the game was his. 1-0 Daaman.

daamanvsjun2.jpgThe second game, where Daaman was able do finish it all; was a Zerg versus Protoss game at Nostalgia. Daaman put the early pressure by first evading a zealot attack, and then trying to break into Jun's main, but failed to do so. In Jun's base a corsair is about to be trained, and Daaman is morphing his main hatchery to a Lair. Daaman has also taken an expansion at '9. A sudden outburst from Jun, who sends his zealots at Daaman. Daamans hydras are there to defend along with some zerglings. For some time there, it seemed like Jun was gonna end it right there, but thanks to Daaman's lurkers, Jun is forced to retreat.
During this attack, Jun has found Daaman's expansion with a corsair, and now sends the rest of his zealots to the zerg expansion - where a spire and a sunken colony are located. With drone and sunken power, Daaman manages to take care of this attack as well.

A couple of minutes later, Daaman has now got his natural expansion up and running, and has also got some mutas and scourges. Jun, who seems to have forgotten what his corsair saw, and has no idea what is about to come. About 15 or so mutalisks can easily deal with the few dragoons at Jun's base. With a last attempt, Jun tries to kill off Daaman's '6 expansion, but with Daaman's lurkers and sunkens there, it's a lost cause. Daaman wins!

Sweden Sweden - United Kingdom United Kingdom 3-2 (7-4)
Daaman[SWE] + Dealer[SWE] vs. hN)HaSuGuRu + hN)jJuNnToSsPlayers:
Sweden Dealer[SWE], Sweden Daaman[SWE],
United Kingdom hN)HaSuGuRu, United Kingdom hN)jJuNnToSs
Map(s): The Lost Temple

dealerdaamanvsgurutoss1.jpgThe 2on2 games were both very very similar so we chose only to report from the first one: In the start, the two Englishmen gather outside Dealer's base with some zealots and zerglings - nothing Dealer can't handle. Instead, Daaman has teched up to vultures; and since Dealer has quite many zealots - they attack the zerg. They almost manage to kill him, but with mutalisks popping out of the eggs, they retreat in order to lick their wounds. The Guru tries to harass a bit with his mutalisks, but the Swedish vikings recover from it in no time. Daaman counters with some harass as well, sending his vultures into the zerg peon line. With goliaths, vultures, dragoons and zealots, and the zerg incapable of gathering minerals, the game is done. And with jJuNnToSs's pack of zealots and dragoons killed off, they both left the game. GG!

MoZ & WhiZ vs. iD.MidiaN & nuroz
The second and last 2on2 match between Sweden WhiZ & Sweden MoZ and United Kingdom iD.MidiaN & United Kingdom nuros was cancelled by UK due to lack of time and since the results had no chance of changing the final outcome of the match! Sweden therefore won the last 2on2 by walk over.
