The real surprise happened when we learned recently that CIS team AVANGAR won PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Invitational at IEM Katowice 2018.
The tournament lasted for two days in which the top 16 teams in the world participated in a total of eight rounds. In addition to the points earned by place, the team received an additional 10 points based on each kill in a game.
The first and fourth match showed us that OpTic Gaming can be the first winner of IEM Katowice PUBG tournament, with leaving them a 248-point lead over the second place Team Vitality.
In the second round, however, Avangar came up big with 17 kills while the third match went to Team Vitality.
The most action-packed match of the day happened right at the end, as the final circle closed in on the small factory to the west of Mylta Power Plant. There was a big firefight between OpTic Gaming, Team Solomid and LGD Gaming, though OpTic Gaming pulled out the win on the end. At this time, it seemed that OpTic was a strong contender for that coveted IEM chicken dinner.
The second day, however, began unexpectedly bad for OpTic Gaming. After finishing 12th, seventh, ninth and third in the last four games they need the last win with the huge number of kills for the championship title. AVANGAR, however, took advantage of OpTic's sudden slump to win the sixth round, earning them 500 points and put them on the top of the leaderboard.
The last game was tense: OpTic needed to both win and get enough kills to overcome AVANGAR's sudden lead. Unfortunately, OpTic Gaming could do the latter, but not the former. Just like that, AVANGAR became the first champion of Intel Extreme Masters PUBG tournament. They earned $25,000 with this Championship title. OpTic Gaming was, on the end, on the second place, only 75 points behind of team AVANGAR.
