Overwatch became a worldwide phenomenon when it was released, and it's only gotten bigger ever since. While the first game is still going strong, Blizzard will make the move to Overwatch 2 sooner or later. While the name denotes a sequel, all cosmetics and progress from the first game can be transferred over to the second.
In this way, Overwatch 2 is less of a direct sequel and more of a continuation of the first game. During the game's announcement, Overwatch Director Jeff Kaplan emphasized that Blizzard is trying to redefine the definition of a sequel.
