Publicly open custom games coming soon™

“We’re very interested in the concept of enabling players to make custom games open to the public.” This is what game director Jeff Kaplan recently said in a forum post.

Back in June Jeff Kaplan made a long forum post where he talked about some of the things the Overwatch developer team is working on at the moment. One of those things was how they want to improve the custom game feature. “…we want to improve overall functionality but figure out a way for players to play more Custom Games with their friends or with strangers.” With this, he meant a server browser type feature. Now he revealed once more that the team is “very interested” in this idea. Further he also says that “we have time scheduled to explore this and we’re pretty excited about it.”

This idea is not new to the gaming world, but is something highly appreciated by the communities. The possibilities could be endless. As most people already know, the existing Custom Games feature in Overwatch gives the players many options. You can amplify all heroes HP to 200%, increase how fast ultimates charges, choose any map, any hero…

Generally, a public server feature is like the current Custom Game mode, just slightly elevated. You make your own "rules" to the game, and open it up to the public. (Or just invite whoever you want to join.) People could make their own tournaments or custom brawls, and streamers could easily play with their viewers. (Just like the forum post creator says.)

If you want to read the forum post yourself, or perhaps give your own opinion on the matter, you can find it here.
