Effects of the Beta: Hero overviews out-of-game

The Closed Beta's main goal is of course to get feedback from players to make the game even better. One feature that was suggested is Hero overviews outside of the game.

The main selling point of Overwatch is the uniqueness of it's playable characters. The amount of unique situations that all the different abilities make possible, is both exciting and overwhelming. Blizzard has valued accessibility highly in all of their games, and continues to take steps to protect this ideal.

In Overwatch, the way players learn about the kits of the heroes, is through the use of Ability overviews that are shown when pressing F1 in the game like shown above. These overviews provide quick and compact summaries of what is possible, while not going into more advanced tactics that these abilities make possible. While the F1 screen layout is a perfectly good way for players to learn their current character, there is no way to quickly take a look at all the heroes' abilities in-game. A player currently has to load up every single character in the game, or look up abilities on the internet, to get a good summary of all the possible situations that can happen in an average Overwatch match.

This is not ideal, and Jeff Kaplan agrees. In a suggestion thread on the official forums, beta tester Femur stated his desire for "a way to view hero's info without having to enter an actual game". Jeff Kaplan came upon the thread, and answered that part of the topic with a clear "We agree. This is coming (probably early next year)".

So good news, the beta process is still working and is helping shape the best game experience Overwatch can provide.
