How do you support in Overwatch?

We look at the most dedicated support hero in Overwatch: Mercy. Watch this gameplay video and see if you agree with what we see going on.

In the below gameplay video, the defensive team uses Mercy to better secure capture points throughout the game. capture point A is lost due to some slick assassinations by Hanzo, but the Mercy gameplay starts to shine during the weary battle for capture point B. Things go well for Mercy when she is allowed safe positioning to constantly heal and resurrect her allies; it becomes very hard to capture a point after a well timed resurrection

Mercy uses the following abilities to support her allies and better position her safe to do so.

Caduceus Staff
Mercy engages one of two beams that connect to an ally. By maintaining the beams, she can either restore that ally’s health or increase the amount of damage they deal.

Guardian Angel
Mercy flies towards a targeted ally, allowing her to reach them quickly and provide assistance in crucial moments.

Caduceus Blaster
Mercy shoots a round from her sidearm. It's best reserved for emergency personal defense.

Angelic Descent
Propelled by her Valkyrie suit, Mercy slows the speed of her descent from great heights.

Resurrect
Ultimate Ability
Mercy radiates restorative power, bringing nearby dead allies back into the fight with full health.

Mercy looks effective during this match, especially when she gets safe positioning and free heals. Check out the following moments that represent the important characteristics of Mercy gameplay.

1:30 - Mercy is immediately a high priority target. She must find safety immediately.

1:40-2:00 - Mercy has stabilized and found the ideal safe spot to sit back and heal / add increased damage.

2:10 - Mercy uses her Ultimate ability immediately, not trying to get the “perfect” resurrect, instead opting for just one hero. Probably because of how quickly she can gain ultimate meter from healing.

2:22 - Mercy somehow wins a 1v1 with Hanzo. If Hanzo misses his single shot arrows, even a 6 HP Mercy can put out more damage apparently.

3:22 - Hanzo one shots mercy as he was able to sneak up from behind using his wall climb ability. Even though Mercy was in an optimal position to heal without taking damage, the presence of Hanzo made this seemingly safe position vulnerable.

4:00 - Guardian angel allows Mercy to keep up with Pharah, but gives her a predictable trajectory that Hanzo is able to predict and punish.

4:50 - However, Guardian Angel seems ideal in fleeing from enemy Reapers.

5:20 - Pharah + Mercy allow for enhanced mobility.

5:30 - 6:50 the enemy is getting nowhere because they are not putting pressure on the Mercy player, allowing her to heal multiple allies freely. Hanzo sees this and once again tries to assassinate Mercy.

7:40 - Mercy player notices out of the corner that two allies died. Perfect time to resurrect.

10:11 - last minute resurrection saves the defensive team from losing the capture point.

11:20 - Game is ultimately lose when Mercy’s team is over run and the defensive Torbjorn and Bastion are able to set up directly on the capture point.

How will you play Mercy when Overwatch is comes out? Do you sacrifice bonus damage for sustained heals, or bust out your Caduceus Blaster and take the enemy your self? Let us know in the comments section!
