Private Servers

[s]starcraft[/s]The Russian broodwar community got me thinking about how there are subcultures of starcraft gamers that never even see Battlenet. A lot of Russians play in a private server. This is a growing tendency and it happens in many other countries.

I know this is old news for some but there are new improved programs out there that support all the Blizzard games including all the latest patches. Most of the old private gateways, for example, only allowed patch 1.07 in Starcraft.
I knew about the Russian Russia and the Argentinean Argentina private gateways. But holy molly! There are many, many more.

Another reason to silence people when they say Starcraft is dying. Also if you where a famous pro-gamer and you wanted to hang out and play some friendly 'private' games online with some other pro-gamers ~ where would you hide out?

In the general forums I will publish specific information on gateway launcher programs and private gateway websites and IP addresses after I review Blizzard policy on the subject. I know they allow some and some not. Same goes for the private gateways. Use the poll to give us some feedback.

All said and done, although some may not agree with private servers in view that they divide our community, it does give us a warm feeling to know they exist. If one day Blizzard vanishes or Battlenet becomes a fee-based server, we can carry on busyness as usual.
