We’re finally getting a sequel to Monster Hunter: World… eventually.
Capcom had a special announcement to close out The Game Awards 2023: a sequel to Monster Hunter: World is finally on its way, titled Monster Hunter Wilds. The publisher touts this new game as, “The next generation in the genre defining series,” as it’s only launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

A new flagship Monster Hunter game is coming
Monster Hunter is Capcom’s second highest-selling franchise of all time (after Resident Evil), with Monster Hunter: World having scooped up a good amount of those sales on its own. Fans did get Monster Hunter Rise to chew on in 2021, but it looks like this new game is aiming to be a full-fledged follow-up to World with next-gen capabilities. Series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto hyped up the announcement at The Game Awards before confirming that the game is still far from release.
Monster Hunter Wilds is launching sometime in 2025, which means the game could theoretically launch right next to Grand Theft Auto 6. Tsujimoto confirmed that while the game’s launch is still far off, Capcom plans to share another look at the game in Summer 2024. That lines up with the annual E3 season of game announcements, which tends to happen regardless of E3’s actual existence that year.
The trailer only gives us a brief tease of what to expect from Monster Hunter Wilds, but it’s clear that Capcom is aiming for another open-world entry in the franchise. The visuals are an upgrade over Monster Hunter Rise, and the trailer features interesting weather mechanics with electrical storms causing low visibility and potentially changing monster behaviour patterns. We can only speculate what Wilds plans to bring to the table for now, but we’ll likely see better visuals at a minimum.
