Dota2 is still in the ever growing beta phase, yet it is ahead of Counter-Strike: Source, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim and many other released games in amount of average players per day. Without any other precedents, this feat might show the strength relying on the stand alone and unified platform Dota 2 is expected to be.

Even though Dota 2 Beta player population is growing day by day, the game is falling short to other games when the active player peak count is the measure stick. Football Manager 2012, Counter Strike, and Counter Strike: Source are all ahead of Dota 2 in this field, surely one that many players around the world want to beat by getting a coveted Beta Key.

Back in April 2010, Dota 2 dev IceFrog accounted the player base to be around 7-11 million players (without counting China), expecting it to grow even more in the not so distant future.

IceFrog: Q&A Session #4, Posted 04-30-2010 at PlayDota.com Wrote:

Q: How popular is DotA these days? (from china_white)

A: I can only give estimates based on getdota.com usage, because I can't track ingame downloads or fansites or downloads from China. It is roughly estimated (based on the statistics from popular Chinese sites) that the Chinese DotA audience is about 40-50% of the worldwide audience. Not counting China, the playerbase is estimated to be somewhere between 7-11 million. I expect the audience to grow even more in the not too distant future.

What do you think? Will Dota 2 be as successful as Dota?
Or will it fare better or worse?
