The Evolution Highlight: DuskBin talk Dota 2

DuskBin won the recently concluded The Evolution, a $600 open tournament held in the halls of Mineski last weekend and did not suffer a single loss during the entire competition. Three members, including the captain, are from Cebu, a small island in the Philippines. This interview was conducted at Mineski Infinity Cebu in the night of their arrival from Manila.

Imaginasian, Atom, Bakuryu

Congratulations on the undefeated streak in the tournament. Please introduce yourselves guys, tell us something about yourselves and about how you got into competitive gaming.
Bakuryu:
Hi I’m Michael Ross, also known as bakuryu/ninjaboogie, DuskBin’s captain and carry. I’m 20 years old and currently a student. I enjoy sports (such as football), going to the gym and playing Dota2. I started playing 8 years ago and I have played 6 years of DotA, 1 and a half years of HoN and 3 to 4 months of Dota2. My competitive gaming experience started around 5 years ago when my team, BTE won the championship in the WCG Cebu DotA qualifiers.

Atom:
Hi I’m Jundell Navaja, also known as Atom, DuskBin’s support. I’m 21 years old and a professional gamer. I enjoy playing online games. I started playing 5 years ago but it wasn’t until I was 17 that I got into my first competitive tournament. It wasn’t anything big— just a DotA tournament for our course in the university.

Imaginasian:
I’m Marvin Rushton, also known as Imaginasian, DuskBin’s carry. I’m 19 years old and still studying. I enjoy playing computer games. I started playing when I was around 8 years of age. I was playing StarCraft but it was all casual and I didn’t know I could go professional until I reached 14 and DotA came into the picture. I won my first tournament in Coolstep and everything just followed.

I’m curious. How did you get the name DuskBin?
Bakuryu:
It’s a company based in Malaysia. I asked our manager, a personal friend, about potential sponsors. He told me DuskBin, an e-Sports organization, was interested.

What made you guys decide to play Dota2? Aside from this, what other games do you play?
Bakuryu:
When I left my HoN team, I switched to Dota2 after seeing the International tournament. I wanted to try it and when I did, I fell in love with the game instantly. Currently, I don’t play any other games because all my focus is on Dota2 and planning on how to make the team reach its highest potential.

Atom:
I decided to play Dota2 after our team, Latos, disbanded. The Cebu DotA scene was dying because there were only very few players that wanted to go competitive and I guess I just needed a change of scenery. I started to play as soon as I got a betakey. Aside from Dota2, I also play HoN.

Imaginasian:
I started playing last month. My friends invited me to try the game because they wanted me to join their team (DuskBin) locally known as ‘It’s Pro Time’ and the rest is history I guess. Aside from Dota2, I am currently at Masters level in StarCraft II but had to stop because I didn’t have money for load. I also play DotA from time-to-time.

DuskBin Dota2 lineup in the Evolution tournament

You guys mentioned HoN a couple of times and I noticed there were lots of comments from spectators that Heroes of Newerth gave you an edge over the DotA teams that competed in the tournament. Do you think there is some truth in this?

Bakuryu:
Not really. HoN has totally different gameplay and graphics. However, my experience with HoN, like playing with professional gamers such as Loda, Drayich, Akke, Ikzu, H4nn1 and others, gave me an edge over those that do not have exposure. What I mean is that in Cebu where I come from, there are hardly any tournaments, and playing online, in whatever game, was the only way to gain the experience you needed.

Atom:
I cannot answer that because I play both games but I can only say that HoN is more fast-paced so if you get used to that, other games are easier.

Imaginasian:
I don’t know because I never played HoN but playing DotA definitely gives an edge because it practically has the same concept.

Thanks for clearing that up. Seeing as how you are off to a good start, what more can we expect from DuskBin?
Bakuryu:
We’re going to be joining tournaments all over Southeast Asia and we’ll try our best to be at the top, together with my comrade Mr.Swish, as we have once done in our HoN team.

Atom:
More tournaments definitely! LAN, International, you name it! All the tournaments we can join, we’ll join them.

Imaginasian:
We’ll join all the tournaments and try to bring honor to Cebu and the Philippines.

Alright! Thanks for your time Mike, Jan2x and Marf. Good luck on your future endeavors. Any shoutouts?
Bakuryu:
A big shoutout to my former HoN teammates ismification, lutan and my friends from HoN. As well as my former DotA teammates JR, Sid and Rito. Special thanks to Raymond Tambis, our manager. Shoutout to Mischa :) , sexy Jinn, Ryu, and Ash. Thanks to Gama for the interview.

Atom:
No shoutouts from me. (Manager inserts: he would like to give a shoutout to Earl <3.)

Imaginasian:
Thanks to Angelina and Brad for adopting me (coz this is Africa). Thanks to CubeHeart/paeijwei for this interview and Raymond Tambis our manager. A big shoutout to Team Cube, Latos, Glesh boys, Team Back-up, Tony and Jubbz. Also to all Cebu gamers.
