The Team PokerStars Pro has accumulated 727, 100 chips going into Day 3, Williams has more than 80,000 more than his closest competitor, Maurice Hawkins, who claims 646,500 in chips. William’s fellow PokerStars teammate and tournament crusher Vanessa Selbst also finished Day 2 strong with a comfortable 315,200 chips. Williams wasn’t shy about whose stack he was aiming for, declaring on Twitter ““606k! Rawr. @VanessaSelbst what you got? #wptBorgata,” among other competitive jests toward Selbst.
As the field narrows, the every looming “money bubble” draws near. The top 100 finishers will be guaranteed at least $8,386; a nice return on their initial $3,500 investment. Williams and other chip leaders will likely look to chip up by exploiting amateurs and shorter stacks looking for a pay day.
David Williams shot onto the poker scene in 2004 WSOP Main Event, finishing second place to the ‘Fossilman’ Greg Raymer. Since then, Williams has won a WSOP bracelet (2006 Stud) and a WPT Championship, defeating Eric Baldwin headsup for $1.5 million. The former ‘Magic the Gathering’ professional was signed to Team PokerStars shortly thereafter, and seems to have changed from his earlier diamond-toothpick “baller” persona in favor of a more conservative, and some would say, more likeable style.
