Squirtle reaches playoff after four tiebreakers

We witnessed eSports history today. A total of four (!) times, Socke, SjoW and Squirtle played each other in best-of-one formatted rounds. This after Socke had performned an incredible comeback in the group stage.

SjoW was up 2-2 in the group with one more round, while Socke and Squirtle both had 1-3 and one leg out of the playoff. But due to Squirtle killing off SjoW 2-0 and Socke defeating Fenix by 2-0, the three were locked in a tiebreaker stalemate.

And it was almost ridiculous. The tiebreaker went on even after the expo halls at CeBIT closed, but the ESL organization was decisive in continuing the show. And after three tiebreakers still in a deadlock, it was not until the fourth tiebreaker round that we finally saw an end to the humour show.

The Korean Protoss player Squirtle from StarTale was able to defeat both of his opponents in the fourth round.

A tiebreaker is nothing unusual, but it is not often the eSport onlookers witness such an elongated deciding. Back in 2007, at the World Cyber Games in Seattle, the three White-Ra, Stork and Ex went at it three times to decide a champion.

Squirtle now moves on and is set to play IdrA tomorrow morning at 09:00 CET.

mOOn-GLaDe, who missed the first place in the group after losing to Moon, will be duking it out with MorroW in the quarter final round.
