The yearly World Cyber Games Pan-American championship was played last weekend. For the first time in two years, it was won by someone else than Juan "Fenix" Carlo.
The Chliean Zerg player Pipe "KiLLeR" Zuñiga could defeat the FnaticMSI player Juan "Fenix" Carlo in the grand final by a 3-1 score to win $1,000 USD and become the fourth StarCraft player to have won a WCG Pan-America gold medal.
The Zerg player defeated the Panama player LimbiC and Costa Rica player iNFESTED to come out in first place at the group stage. He then knocked down the Brazilian player Paulo "ReasoN" Cardoso to lower bracket, while he himself could move on to the winner bracket.
There he beat Fenix down to the loser bracket by a 2-1 score. But the Peruvian Terran player bounced back with a 2-0 win over ReasoN only to lose in the grand final.
Previous winners of the WCG Pan American event are Nick "Testie" Perentesis (2006), Sean "Day9" Plott (2007) and Juan "Fenix" Carlo (2008, 2009).
