HOTD 101: intro to the rounds of 64 and 32

I know I'm not the only one whose bracket got busted after this past weekend. Here's the latest in College Heroes.

Heroes of the Dorm may just be getting started, but the first two rounds weren't without some major upsets. Fantasy brackets are already crumbling, as 75% of the teams have already been eliminated. If you missed any of the games or just want to watch some spectacular highlight reels, an angel from on high has already done the work. Check out Day 1 and Day 2.

Group A: Number 1 seed...pssshhh!

With perhaps the biggest upset in the tournament so far, Group A started off with Texas Tech (16) shutting out Waterloo (1). The other victorious teams in the group fell in line according to bracket seeding, but there were some close matches found between Illinois (5) vs. Miami (12), and LSU 2 (6) vs. Case Western (11).

On Sunday, every single Group A match went to a 3rd game. Hopefully, this forecasts some very intense and close matchups in the upcoming rounds. The most unpredictable result from Day 2 was LSU 2 (6) taking a victory over Assumption (3).

Group B: Comfort picks aren't always best picks.

There weren't many huge surprises in the first round, but UCLA 1 (9) did manage to soundly defeat Ohio State 1 (8), despite being initially placed under them. The biggest game of the weekend for Group B was definitely Utah's (3) loss to Johns Hopkins (6) in the Round of 32.

Both underdog victories in Group B represent a trend that could take place, especially outside of the pro scene. Some teams will pick suboptimal characters during drafts, probably because they are much more comfortable playing them. This is fully understandable. But in most instances of players taking these comfort picks, their team composition takes a hit and the other team wins.

Group C: Expectations are shattered.

Both days this past weekend saw huge upsets from Group C. In ascending order of insanity: Ohio State 2 (13) shutout LSU 1 (4), South Florida (14) beat Michigan 1 (3), and to top if off Harvard (15) blew out CAL 1 (2). Alas, this string of victories took out many of our brackets along with the kitchen trash.

These underdogs continued to rampage on Day 2. Ohio State 2 (13) defeated Temple (5), and Harvard (15) brought another 2-0 victory against Indiana Purdue (7). At this point there is no way to know what to expect. Will UConn, the group's number 1 seed, be usurped on their road to the Heroic Four?

Group D: So far so good for tournament favorite.

Everything went as expected for Group D during the Round of 64, at least according to seeding. A few disruptions occurred in the Round of 32 with two underdog shutouts. East Carolina (7) defeated Toronto (2), and Minnesota (6) upended Georgia Tech (3).

With two easy shutouts, the question still remains whether any of the Group D teams will be able to oppose Michael "MichaelUdall" Udall and his ASU team in their march to Seattle.

Was Pepper Brooks talking about White Goodman or MichaelUdall? We may never know.
