Heroes of the Storm World Championship announced

With a prize pool of 1.2 million dollars, Blizzard sets the bar high for the first Heroes of the Storm World Championship.

After the runaway success of the Heroes of the Dorm collegiate tournament series, we all knew this was coming. Blizzard is no stranger to disrupting tried and true genres and their strategy is simple. Have faith in the success of your title, build a constant stream of momentum, and put on a spectacular show. Last year at BlizzCon 2014, this meant bringing in Metallica to perform live on the same weekend a brand new IP was announced. How do you follow that?

Apparently, by focusing on esports. One could have guessed that BlizzCon 2015 would host the Hearthstone, Starcraft II, and World of Warcraft World Championships, but news of Heroes of the Storm joining the lineup warms the heart.

Eighth teams will emerge from a long and arduous series of qualifiers: two American, two European, two Chinese, one Korean and one Taiwanese. In typical Blizzard fashion, expect a grand stage and a highly polished event that will trump every other Heroes of the Storm event we have seen thus far.

No details have been announced yet on the registration process, but when those go live, we will keep you updated.
