Proleague's best games: Round 4, Week 1

Ranked by: SuperHario
Written by: Nydra

Proleague is already in its fourth round and Heart of the Swarm has certainly made things way (way!) more exciting. To follow up on that notion, we bring you the first edition of our weekly "Proleague's best games" because how do you ever get fed up with matches like these?

5. Rain vs Flash on Planet S VOD

• Why was it good: Because it has Flash and Rain in it, that's why!

On a more serious note, this is a game of life and death as the two titans met in the ace match of KT Rolster vs SK Telecom, or the opening game of Proleague Round 4. After surviving the most annoying Oracle's in the entire history of HotS, Flash turns on the aggression button and starts bashing on Rain with a 3-base bio army.

Flash and Rain play the tug of war for some time until the big guns come into play. Once High Templars, Ghost and Colossi hit the field, it all becomes very messy, very quickly.

4. Jaedong vs Soulkey on Planet S VOD

• Why was it good: Because it had the sweet aroma of old-school BroodWar Muta/Ling wars and you should always watch Jaedong's Muta/Ling wars.

Like the #5 match, this one too meant a lot. Coming out from a very black series of four consecutive losses, EG-TL were pitted against the Proleague leaders, Woongjin Stars themselves.

After six hard-fought sets, the score was tied 3-3 and it was up to Jaedong to "make the miracle" for EG-TL. With astounding diligence, the Tyrant tormented Soulkey and hindered every attempt of his to get a third up while slowly edging ahead in the gas wars. Although not the most spectacular match to behold, it's a classic tractate on Zerg vs Zerg tactics and mindset.

3. Action vs Innovation on Korhal Floating Island VOD

• Why was it good: Because it starts with a triple Baneling drop and that's not even the most exciting thing in the game.

There isn't a single moment past the boring opening phase that something's not dying in this match. Innovation starts with a 35 SCV deficit after Action's carpet bombing but through perseverance and out-of-this-world Bio splits he makes a return and the game heats up. Simultaneous doom drops, Swarm Hosts, chain Fungals, defensive Nydus Worms BroodWar-style, Marine/Baneling sambas and constant, breath-taking, I-wish-I-had-a-second-monitor intensive action.

Oh, and I don't know if it was some anti-pedestrian holiday that day but nothing in this game simply walks to its destination, everything is being transported one way or another.

2. Baby vs hero[join] on Fighting Spirit VOD

• Why was it good: Hero displays a strong will to live in this match, surviving despite Baby's crippling contains. Excellent crisis management overall.

At many points it felt that hero[join] was straight on going to die to the Terran forces but someway somehow, CJ's Protoss ace endured. By keeping his calm, properly assessing the situation and picking his fights very carefully, hero[join] returns back into the game after losing his natural to a contain. From there on madness ensues and the match becomes a combination of nail-biting defenses, clutch recalls, devastating storms and paralyzing time warps!

1. Flash vs Fantasy on Akilon Wastes VOD

• Why it was the best: A 44-minute classic mech vs mech TvT with the two of the greatest Terran players to have ever touched the game!

When we talked about Jaedong vs Soulkey we mentioned how reminiscent this game was of BroodWar and it is even more true about this one between Flash and Fantasy. The two OSL champions engage in arguably the most entertaining TvT since Flash vs Innovation at MLG Winter and make for one unforgettable show.

The notion of mech immobility is completely shattered and the war is everywhere. Tanks are being dropped on Tanks so that a position might be gained and SCVs constantly die to Vulture Hellion flames. In those ground battles, Flash takes the lead inch by inch and starts shoving Fantasy back but a timely Battlecruiser tech promptly changes the way winds blow. The battle is soon take airborne and its octane level rise, if such a thing is even possible.

If this is not enough for you, how about seeing the master of harassment reduced to *0* SCVs?
