sGPL: Eriador vs HellGhost

[s]sgpl[/s]Another great battle has been played! This time Norway Eriador[pG] faced Brazil HellGhost[pG] in Group 2, "the pG group".

Game 1, what a start!
The first game began on Forbidden Zone, a random versus random game. HellGhost turned Zerg bottom left, and Eriador Protoss, upper right.

One part of starcraft which I think is great is these kind of situations - no one knows his opponent race, and they are unable to scout them fast since it was an island map. This can turn the game that is something different and very unique.

HellGhost went a standard mutalisk build order, he hadn't found Eriador with his scouting overlords yet, but had checked the both other possible starting locations on the map, so he charged Eriador's main as soon as his mutalisks were morphed.

Eriador's build order on the other hand, was more a Protoss versus Terran one. 1 gateway, robotics facility and an observatory. He had built 5 dragoons when the mutalisks came, and he scared them off. In order to defend himself against another mutalisk attack, Eriador now built another gateway and a forge --> 2 cannons in his main. My idea was that the templar archive was for psionic storms, but I was wrong, you'll see why soon.

HellGhost built a hatchery in his first expansion and kept producing mutalisks, 2 or 4 scourges as well.

erivshellghost_mutes.gifEriador was expanding aswell, he started building cannons there before the nexus. His units were transported out of his main using his shuttle. Dragoons, zealots and dark archons. As the mutalisks are attacking his building expansion, he uses the maelstrom to lock down 5-6 mutas while he is attacking them. Good work!

Eriador now expands his natural one as well, doing the standard expansion build order for Protoss on island maps: Pylon --> Cannons --> Nexus. HellGhost does the same, takeing some of the expansion sites in the middle and one upper right.

HellGhost has rebuilt his army with some more mutalisks by now and marched towards Eriador's first expansion. But wait, there are 8 cannons in the way. What the --- let's blast them. HellGhost whiped out all the cannons but just as the last one is destroyed, 2 archons arrive. HellGhost flees the battle and didn't kill a single probe during the attack. Whoa, great.

Eriador, with zealots, dragoons, high templars, dark archons and archons (notice: no corsairs at all), now realises something should be done. He had been quite passive so far. His observers have now got several expansions in sight, ready to be killed. Expansion after expansion vanishes from the map, but Eriador finally got stopped in a massacre of 15 (+) guardians that HellGhost had just morphed. Mael- and psionicstorms, dragoons and archons did their best but the army was killed in an instant and the defeat inevitable. First win goes to HellGhost!

Game 2 - Economics -_-a!
The second game, played on Plains to hill - both players random. Eriador becoming Zerg, upper right and HellGhost Protoss bottom right.

Eriador started with building a hatchery at his entrance, followed by a spawning pool and a gas in his main. Soon after a hatchery, at his first expansion appeared and some zerglings also became into existance. HellGhost on the other hand built 2 gateways and a stargate. A corsair was sent out for scouting and overlord hunting as he was producing zealots and dragoons.

"All the candy that is left in my bag to Eriador who dares breaking the standard game pattern!"

I was expecting a fast lair from Eriador, but no, instead we saw a mass production of drones, drones and drones. He was building up an economy worthy its name. He was definately preparing for a huge mid-game mutalisk mass producing here. He expanded 2 islands close to his main (12 and 3) and protected it with sunks, a few hydras and some lurkers.

The first real attack was made at the 12 o'clock expansion of Eriador's, by HellGhost. He unloaded zealots + goons and killed it quite easy, using the corsairs (5) to keep away the mutalisks.

Eriador made a few attacks but didn't get very far with it, he just made sure that HellGhost didn't create another expansion and kept on powering up jos forces. His economics were really good at this point, but he kept on expanding, this time the 6 o'clock island. This came to be a similiar situation to the cold war - both players powering up for a long time, awaiting the final battle. HellGhost unloaded zealots, high templars and dragoons at the island but they were stopped by defending sunkens (7 or more) , spores (2), hydras (some) and lurkers (a few). So, he just stood there with his army letting Eriador build more and more sunkens and reinforcements.

It was close to an ending (that battle, not the game) when the mutalisk army arrived and a queen with it. Eivind used ensnare on some zealots and dragoons, and commanded his mutalisks to hover over them and tried to get some storms over him. HellGhost walked right into the trap -> he put a storm at the mutalisks while they were right above his army. Eivind moved his forces but HellGhost was unable to, due to the ensare. This was repeated a few times and killed some, but not that many dragoons and zealots. This is what I like with Eriador's playing style, during the league he has used all types of special abilities while engaging his enemy. I especially liked the maelstorm part in the previous game.

erivshellghost_2_mutesstormed.gifHellGhost was now yearning for another mineral base. Even though his corsairs fought against the mutalisks quite well, there were too many of them, and there was no lack of money, at least not for Eri. So, when HellGhost finally lost his 11 o'clock base to guardians, that was about it. Eriador was close to losing this one when he lost his first island, but played a great game anyway andmanaged to win it. 1-1, final game awaiting!

He dares doing it!
The last game isn't really a game worth talking about in chronological order, because it was quite odd. It was on Sin Gaema Gowon, HellGhost & Eriador.

erivshellghost_3_obs.gifHellGhost employs a simple strategy with dragoons and observers, but Eriador is up to something. He builds vultures and medics, and expands. Only a few tanks and a bunker in his main against possible reaver drops, but no big army. He places his spider mines all over the expansion, and scans for observers. As he sees the first one, plupp and it goes blind, using a rare medic ability which I've forgotten the name of (might be due to its rarity ). Anyway, Eriador builds his first turret in the game and sees two more observers and does that sneaky spell again.

But as HellGhost built a couple of zealots and ran charged in with them, almost all the spider mines were "used". The dragoons are now invading Eriadors base and his defences didn't hold, simply because there were too few tanks (like 4-5 max) and vultures.

All the candy that is left in my bag to Norway Eriador who dares breaking the standard game pattern, and some biscuits to Brazil HellGhost for defeating him, 2 games to 1!
GG!
