WCG Preview: Slayer

[s]event_wcg[/s]Slayer, the Norweigan Starcraft legend, today registered his participation for WCG Nordic 2004. The curiosity around this player has been very high; Only an hour after I added him to the list, I received several e-mails asking to interview him and people were expressing their anticipation and happiness that he would show up.

Norway =[aBs]=Slayer, 20, won the Starcraft Masters 2000 (KBK), during this event a Norweigan television channel followed and recorded his success. This documentary was named Alias: Slayer and contained 30 minutes of shooting and interviewing with Slayer before, during and after the tournament. Notice that it's dated as long ago as 2000 and you can read more about the movie » in this old news post. It's in Norweigan but there are subtitles available, more information » in a teamliquid.net thread.

I contacted Slayer shortly after he sent his participation e-mail, and here we go:

I was very happy to see your name in the participation list for the WCG Nordic Preliminaries, but I was also suprised. Many tell me you have not played for ages - how come you chose to participate?
  • Basically its because I've never been to USA and I wanna go. The trip to Stockholm will be fun as well. I don't expect to win but I think I have a decent chance.

How long ago did you play actively?
  • Almost 2 years now.

Two years is quite a long time, how much do you feel your old gaming - the KBK finals for instance - might help you in this event?
  • Well, it helps having alot of experience playing under pressure and away from the setup you have at home. Alot of people play far worse at live tournaments because of those things. As for the game having changed, I've practiced with Stinger and watched some replays lately to keep up.

Who would be your worst enemy in the preliminaries? How much up-to-date are you within the current Scandinavian BW-Scene?
  • I don't know, Eriador is the favourite so I guess id have to go with him, but there are probably 4-5 other players who can win. Him, Stinger and Daaman are pretty much the only ones I know of todays bw players.

And what about your good old friend Sven?
  • He's on vacation right now in Croatia, so unfortunately he couldn't come.

Assuming you won the tournament now and a progaming team gives you an offer to play for them. Would you accept it?
  • I definately wouldn't. You have to have a desire to be the best and passion for the game which you lose after playing it as long as I have =] I still have fun playing but only on a limited basis. The only game I'll be playing after this competition is poker.

Yeah speaking of poker, what are you doing now that you've dropped SC?
  • Right now I'm playing poker to save some money before becoming a fulltime student in August. I play about 3-4 hours a day on average.

Sweden and Finland are facing eachother at the WCG Preliminaries and Norway needs a few more players - You think you would play as a national player if they asked? ;)
  • If I was asked I would probably play, but it would be a one time thing since I'm not very active at the moment.

Alright, I wish you the best of luck the 31st of July!
  • Thanks.
