Fumito Ueda is back with a new game.
The team behind some of gaming's most acclaimed adventure titles have finally pulled back the curtain on their next project. During Summer Game Fest on Friday, GenDesign officially revealed gen Atlas, a single-player open-world action-adventure game set on a mysterious abandoned planet. The reveal marks the studio's first new game since The Last Guardian, with creator Fumito Ueda once again leading development.

What is gen Atlas?
According to GenDesign's press release, players awaken on an abandoned planet without knowing how or why they arrived. The world features vast plains, towering structures, deserted facilities, and a constantly changing sea, with remnants of a long-forgotten civilisation scattered throughout the landscape.
"As you journey deeper into this strange world, a colossal robot awaits," the studio said in a news release. “Its overwhelming power opens paths to places once beyond reach, transforming your conception of the world.” The description also hints at ancient constructs beginning to move again as players uncover more of the planet's secrets.
What did Fumito Ueda say about gen Atlas?
In a statement accompanying the reveal, Ueda said the team hopes the game captures the same sense of wonder that defined the studio's previous works. "We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery," Ueda said. The trailer offered only a brief glimpse at the game's world and giant mechanical beings, but it already carries many of the atmospheric and mysterious qualities that fans associate with Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.
Ueda is widely known for directing Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, games that helped define a minimalist style of storytelling and environmental design that continues to influence the action-adventure genre today.
When is gen Atlas releasing?
GenDesign has not announced a release date for gen Atlas, but is currently planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC via the Epic Games Store.
