Windrose sells over one million copies, surpasses 200,000 players on Steam

The hold is full, and the voyage is just getting started!

The wind’s been strong and the cannons loud, as Windrose has wasted no time hauling in players and coin alike while its pirate life takes shape. The pirate-themed survival crafter has exploded out of early access into a full-blown player surge, with servers creaking, boars rampaging, and a million copies already claimed by players.

Windrose, developed by Kraken Express, has officially “plundered” over 1 million copies sold in under a week of release. The announcement was shared via the game’s official social post:

Windrose hits another sales milestone

The studio also published a Steam community update celebrating the milestone and the game’s early peak activity:

“Ahoy, captains! We have just plundered another milestone – 1,000,000 copies, and ‘we’ means ‘you’ – a crew of fine brave captains sailing the seas of Windrose.”

The message also confirmed Windrose has reached over 200,000 concurrent players, with the team describing player engagement as “absolutely astonishing,” while continuing to track feedback, streams, and community content during ongoing updates.

SteamDB charts show that Windrose hit 222,134 concurrent players less than 24 hours ago, surpassing some of the previous hits within the survival-crafting genre like Dune: Awakening and Enshrouded.

How did Windrose become popular?

Windrose’s breakout didn’t happen overnight. The game gained major traction during February’s Steam Next Fest, where it reportedly drew around one million wishlists during the event window.

Ahead of release, wishlists climbed to around 1.5 million, helping set the stage for its strong early sales performance and rapid player spike after launch.

The PvE-only focus has also been a key draw, particularly for survival-crafting fans looking for cooperative progression without competitive pressure.

What makes Windrose popular right now?

Windrose has also gained attention for its more chaotic survival moments, particularly its aggressive wildlife. A running joke within the community has even seen boars labelled as unexpectedly overpowered early-game threats.

The developers themselves leaned into it, with a community post graphic joking that “the boar got a promotion,” referencing the creature’s notorious difficulty spike in early gameplay.

Are Windrose co-op servers and multiplayer working properly?

While Windrose’s launch has been strong, it hasn’t been without choppy waters. Some players have reported issues with co-op connectivity in certain regions, particularly around early multiplayer stability.

And before the weekend kicked off, Kraken Express acknowledged these problems and pushed updates and guidance through Steam and Discord to help improve connectivity and stability. Despite these issues, the studio has remained active in communicating fixes and monitoring feedback, as the player base scales rapidly.

As updates continue and servers stabilise, Windrose’s early voyage is shaping up as a strong entry in the modern survival-crafting space. Perhaps the boars really did deserve their promotion, after all.
