Blizzard announces Overwatch Rush, a top-down spin-off designed for mobile platforms

Overwatch Rush takes familiar heroes and places them in 4v4 matches.

Blizzard Entertainment has announced a brand-new Overwatch mobile game, and no, it’s not the port you might have been hoping for. Overwatch Rush is a top-down hero shooter starring familiar Overwatch characters like Mercy and Reaper, with 4v4 PvP gameplay. The game is being designed exclusively for iOS and Android platforms.

Blizzard reveals mobile Overwatch spin-off game: Overwatch Rush

This week, Blizzard dropped a video showing off early gameplay for its next big mobile game: Overwatch Rush, a mobile spin-off of its iconic first-person hero shooter game. Blizzard describes Overwatch Rush as “a new top-down Hero shooter designed specifically for mobile set in the Overwatch universe,” giving players a different perspective on classic Overwatch heroes and maps.

Overwatch Rush is not being developed by Overwatch’s core development team, Team 4. Instead, the mobile game is being developed by a “dedicated team” with “deep mobile experience” at Blizzard. The game is being built specifically for mobile players, and Blizzard is now preparing to test it out in specific countries and regions.

In the gameplay video above, players can get a sneak peek at how Overwatch Rush’s matches play out. The game has a MOBA-like top-down camera, but its PvP format appears to be similar to the main game, with players battling for control of specific objectives. Heroes like Mercy, Reaper, Tracer, and Reinhardt can be seen in the trailer with largely the same ability kits as the original game, as well.

Some changes will likely be made to these heroes’ abilities to work better in Overwatch Rush’s fast-paced gameplay format (matches appear to be shorter as well). One example can be seen in Reinhardt’s shield, which appears larger and curved around the edges in Overwatch Rush.

Overwatch Rush does not have a release date yet.
