Ubisoft’s Far Cry game franchise reportedly being developed as a TV series

Ubisoft may have spilled the beans on FX’s next big show.

A Far Cry TV show is reportedly in development at FX, adapting Ubisoft’s long-running video game franchise for television. The series is expected to capture the games’ signature mix of dark psychological themes and absurd, often chaotic storytelling.

The news surfaced after Ubisoft briefly posted an announcement on its official website, before taking down the page. Reddit users managed to view the details before they were taken down, sparking discussion about the potential adaptation.

Far Cry is a series of first-person shooter games first launched in 2004, blending open-world exploration, tactical combat, and narrative-driven missions. Each instalment places players in exotic or dangerous locations, pitting them against memorable villains in morally complex situations.

Notable entries include Far Cry 3 (2012), which was praised for its compelling antagonist Vaas Montenegro, Far Cry 5 (2018), and Far Cry 6 (2021), each bringing new settings and political themes. The franchise has been critically acclaimed for its immersive worlds and player freedom, though later titles have faced criticism for their formulaic gameplay.

Details from the reported Ubisoft post

The now-removed page claimed that the Far Cry TV show would be co-created by Rob Mac (formerly Rob McElhenney), best known for his work in Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mythic Quest, and Welcome to Wrexham, and Noah Hawley, who is best known for creating Fargo and the upcoming series Alien: Earth.

According to Eurogamer's report, Hawley will reportedly serve as showrunner, while Mac is expected to star in the series.

Executive producers include Mac, Hawley, and Jackie Cohn for More Better Productions, Michael Garcia for 26Keys Productions, Nick Frenkel for 3Arts Entertainment, and Ubisoft’s Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill.

“This collaboration is really an embarrassment of riches,” said Boykin, head of film and television content at Ubisoft Film & Television. “Far Cry is a psychological tailspin that doesn’t shy away from the darkest and most absurd parts of humanity, which aligns perfectly with FX’s bold and fearless storytelling style.”

Reports indicate that the Far Cry FX adaptation will take an anthology approach, with each season featuring a new setting and cast–echoing the standalone stories that have defined the Far Cry games since their debut.

Ubisoft’s growing push into television continues

Although Ubisoft has yet to officially confirm the Far Cry TV show, the project aligns with its strategy to expand major franchises into film and television. According to a Eurogamer report in March, the company formed a dedicated transmedia subsidiary following a €1.16 billion (approximately US$1.87 billion) investment from Tencent. This division focuses on developing Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry for broader entertainment markets.

If the reports prove accurate, the Far Cry FX series could become one of the most high-profile video game adaptations to hit television, backed by an experienced creative team and a network known for making ambitious dramas.
