Ghost of Yōtei State of Play set for 10 July with combat deep dive, customisation, and more

Sucker Punch’s next game gets a closer look this week, with its launch less than 100 days away.

Sucker Punch’s next big title, Ghost of Yōtei, is getting a fresh spotlight this week with a dedicated State of Play presentation. The announcement was made on the PlayStation Blog on 8 July, confirming that fans will be treated to a nearly 20-minute gameplay deep dive on 10 July, hosted by creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox.

In the post, they said the showcase would offer the “best look yet” at Ghost of Yōtei, diving into protagonist Atsu’s journey of vengeance on the northern frontier of Japan. Viewers can expect new details about the game’s combat, fresh weapon types, ways to personalise their adventure, and a first glimpse at special game modes.

Ghost of Yōtei was officially revealed during the May 2024 PlayStation Showcase, where its striking art direction, snow-covered setting, and focus on stealth and swordplay immediately drew comparisons to yet another Japan-set game released this year, Assassin's Creed Shadows. The protagonist, Atsu, is a lone warrior navigating a harsh, isolated landscape shaped by war.

Ghost of Yōtei continues Jin Sakai's legacy with a new warrior, setting, and story

Scheduled for release on 2 October, 2025 exclusively for PlayStation 5, Ghost of Yōtei marks Sucker Punch’s long-awaited return to samurai-inspired action, five years after the critically-acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. With fewer than 100 days to go, anticipation is high, and the upcoming State of Play is poised to deliver key answers about combat mechanics, narrative structure, customisation options, and how this standalone title carves out its own identity in the shadow of its predecessor.

Set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei introduces a new protagonist named Atsu. Her story takes place in Ezo, the region now known as Hokkaido, within a fictionalised version of 17th-century Japan. The sequel shifts away from the Mongol invasion backdrop of the original and explores a different time period, with new characters, weapons, and environments.

The story centres on Atsu’s quest for vengeance against the Yōtei Six, a brutal gang responsible for murdering her family and leaving her for dead 16 years ago. Now armed with the same katana that once pierced her to a burning ginkgo tree, she returns to Ezo to hunt down each target: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and their leader, Lord Saito.

The sequel also introduces a new gameplay mechanic that allows players to glimpse into Atsu’s past, gradually revealing the emotional weight behind her transformation into the new Ghost.

The Ghost of Yōtei State of Play will be streamed live on PlayStation’s official YouTube and Twitch channels on 11 July at 5am SGT / 10pm BST / 11pm CEST / 2pm PST (10 July).
