GTA VI is officially launching more than a year from now.
Ready for a game of good news, bad news? Good news: Rockstar Games has finally announced a release date for Grand Theft Auto VI! Bad news: the highly-anticipated open-world game has now been delayed all the way to 2026.
In an abrupt announcement released today (2 May, 2025) on its social media channels, Rockstar officially confirmed that GTA VI’s release is now set for 26 May, 2025.
Rockstar Games delays Grand Theft Auto VI to May 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI was originally set to launch sometime this Fall, but that no longer looks to be the case. Rockstar has formally announced the highly-anticipated game’s delay online, although it didn’t do so without a sincere apology. “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” said the developer in an online announcement.
Rockstar went on to thank fans for their excitement over the upcoming game’s release, saying:
The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game. With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception.
Rockstar then explained that it needs “this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.” The developer concluded by saying that it hopes to share “more information with you soon.”
And there you have it. This might not come as a big surprise for those who have stuck with Rockstar’s last few game rollouts. Grand Theft Auto V was delayed from its original Q2 2013 release window to September the same year. Red Dead Redemption 2 was delayed twice from its original planned launch in 2017, and finally launched in October 2018.
Let’s just hope that this is the last GTA VI delay we hear about before the game actually launches. GTA VI will now launch on 26 May, 2025.
