DarkZero Esports clinches the ALGS Championship after a nine-match grand final series

Oceania is the king of Apex Legends.

DarkZero Esports are the ALGS world champions after a gruelling nine-match series, becoming only the second team to claim back-to-back LAN titles. Of course, DarkZero was formerly known as Reignite, which won the Split 2 Playoffs with a stand-in. This time, they got picked up by DarkZero just days before the LAN and with a full roster, they showed that they are the best in the world right now.

With that win, DarkZero takes home the ALGS world championship trophy and US$500,000. FURIA Esports end their tournament campaign in second place despite being the first team to reach match-point. However, they won't go home empty-handed as they will take home US$300,000 while their IGL Jacob "HisWattson" McMillin wins the MVP award. Scott "Pandxrz" Maynard, also of FURIA claims the 'Apex Predator' award for the most kills during the tournament, which adds a further US$3,000 to their war chest.

100Thieves rounds up the top three after being one of the more consistent teams during the tournament. They take home US$200,000 for their troubles while also restoring pride to the rest of North America. However, this doesn't trump the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational, which saw a total of 12 teams getting to match-point while the grand finals series saw 11 matches played to determine the winner.

Instead, the ALGS Championship saw nine matches being played in the grand finals with nine teams on match-point. FURIA were the first to be match-point eligible but they, unfortunately, could not close out the series. Despite coming in second, FURIA was the highest-scoring team with 85 points in the entire lobby. DarkZero, on the other hand, had a horrible start to the grand finals, placing outside of the top 10 in the first three matches.

But through it all, DarkZero managed to climb themselves back from the brink of defeat on multiple occasions. It also helps that many of the teams that were match-point eligible began to make costly errors that resulted in them getting their team wiped way too early.

With that win, both the IGL Rhys "Zer0" Perry and Rick "Sharky" Worth are back-to-back champions, being only the other two players outside of TSM to win two LANs in a row. While Noyan "Genburten" Ozkose did miss the Split 2 Playoffs due to COVID, he was back to his very best on the main stage and was one of the reasons DarkZero were so successful.
