ELEAGUE - Week 2 Recap

Week two of Turner's ELEAGUE has concluded, in this piece you will find a brief recap of all matches played over the course of it.

Tuesday, May 31st - Round robin

Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas vs. Canada OpTic Gaming – 11:4, 5:0 (16:4); 10:5, 6:5 (16:10)
Winner: Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas
Maps: de_Cobblestone, de_Train
MVP: Sweden Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg

Cobblestone saw a very dominant performance from the Ninjas, whereby the Swedes were able to secure a very solid initial T side, leaving OpTic Gaming in quite the predicament. Round by round went by in favour of NiP, landing them an 11:4 half-time score. What ensued was an execution, where NiP ran away with five rounds in a row, closing out de_Cobblestone 16:4.

Train was marginally closer, with OpTic showing up in both halves of the map. Initially NiP showed a phenomenal T half, where the Swedes swept 10 rounds in their favour, securing a lead of 10:5. Succeeding this result was backlash from OpTic, where they were able to claw five T rounds in, before NiP took the second bo1 16:10, landing two consecutive map wins.

?France G2 Esports vs. United States Selfless Gaming – 10:5, 6:7 (16:12); 8:7, 8:5 (16:12)
Winner: ?France G2 Esports
Maps: de_Cache, de_Cobblestone
MVP: France Cédric "RpK" Guipouy

Cache kicked off with G2 Esports demonstrating a great T side on the map, with many a successful entry into bombsites, as well as after-plant situation. Said situation lead to a formidable lead of 10:5 on the T side for G2. Selfless weren’t about to throw away the game, as the Americans were slowly picking up rounds against G2. Whilst the effort was valiant, it didn’t lead to a comeback, G2 Esports took away the map 16:12.

Cobblestone sported a similar score, however the picture painted was quite different. Initially Selfless were on the more challenging, T side of the map, however this didn’t seem to affect their ability to go hand-in-hand with the Frenchmen. A decent finish for the Americans as they secure and 8:7 lead on their T side. G2 Esports kicked it up a notch in the second half of the map, where they were incredibly commanding on the T side and simply played their own game against their opponent, cutting the match at 16:12 with two consecutive wins.

?France G2 Esports vs. Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas – 10:5, 6:4 (16:9); 10:5, 6:7 (16:12)
Winner: ?France G2 Esports
Maps: de_Train, de_Dust2
MVP: France Richard "shox" Papillon

The final series of the day demonstrated the work G2 Esports were putting in prior to the event and how far they have come. It all commenced on de_Train, where things were looking rather shaky for the Ninjas at the end of the first half. The Frenchmen consistently showed a stoic defence, unfazed by the opponents' advances. This lead to a 10:5 lead on the CT side for G2. Following this result was an attempt at a comeback from NiP, where the team managed to claw four rounds in their favour, unfortunately for them, it simply wasn't enough as G2 Esports handled their T side well, concluding the first map at 16:9.

De_Dust2 was up next, finalising the map list for this evening. G2 Esports started on the T side, sporting a very successful half, where the team was able to effectively storm sites and secure bomb plants. The rounds accounted for a lot as we were to see in the second half, one where G2 kicked off 10:5. Both teams were desperate to win and this indefinitely showed on the score. Another decent attempt from NiP to close out the match; however G2 simply dominated the first day of the week, winning their fourth match of the day 16:12.

Wednesday, June 1st - Round robin

?France G2 Esports vs. Canada OpTic Gaming – 11:4, 5:10 (16:14); 13:2, 3:2 (16:4)
Winner: ?France G2 Esports
Maps: de_Train, de_Nuke
MVP: France Richard "shox" Papillon

Starting off Wednesday was de_Train, where both teams put up an incredible fight. G2 set foot on the T side, showing yet another dominant T side Train performance, where they seemingly obliterate their opponent without blinking an eye. Said domination lead to an 11:4 T side finish for the Frenchmen, setting a pace OpTic had to try hard to keep up with. The Americans didn't falter at the sight of the score, instead composing themselves and focusing on individual rounds. This proved to be a successful strategy; however it didn't land them the map. G2 take away the first map of the day, 16:14.

A rather eccentric, unexplored pick was seen, de_Nuke. It was abundantly clear from the get-go which team had prepared for the map and which had not. The new iteration of the map has been criticised multiple times by many parties, however some teams, namely G2 Esports simply went ahead and prepared for it, whereas OpTic were lost. 13:2 at half time, succeeded by a 3:2 finish in the second half.

?Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas vs. United States Selfless Gaming – 9:6, 7:3 (16:9);  8:7, 8:5 (16:12)
Winner: Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas
Maps: de_Cobblestone, de_Cache
MVP: Sweden Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg

A decent performance from the Ninjas on de_Cobblestone. Kicking off on the T side the Swedes managed to secure a very respectable half time score, where they successfully stripped the Selfless defence. Round by round went by in favour of the Ninjas, allowing for a 9:6 first half lead. Following was a very composed CT side, where NiP repelled the offense on several occasions, leading to a solid 16:9 lead on the first map of the two.

Up next was de_Cache. The first half saw level play from both teams, whereby no significant lead was secured by either team upon its conclusion. Both sides made some silly mistakes throughout the course, concluding in an 8:7 lead for Selfless' CT side. Transitioning onto the CT side, NiP were ready to make up for the mediocre performance they demonstrated prior. The team was significantly more composed and capable in the second half. This meant a 16:12 finish and two consecutive maps in the bag of the Swedes.

Canada OpTic Gaming vs. United States Selfless Gaming – 14:1, 2:0 (16:1); 8:7, 8:7 (16:14)
Winner: United States OpTic Gaming
Maps: de_Cobblestone, de_Mirage
MVP: Spain Óscar "mixwell" Cañellas

The last series of the day, OpTic Gaming really showed up. A difficult start for Selfless Gaming as their countrymen were ruthless on de_Cobblestone. OpTic start on the T side, nothing spectacular, apart from the fact that the team end the half at an absolutely astonishing 14:1. With nothing to themselves Selfless throw in the towel, giving up the first map at 16:1 in favour of OpTic Gaming.

Proving to be a far more interesting map than the previous, we saw de_Mirage. Both teams showed a solid first half, whereby no one had a significant lead by the end of it. Occasional mistakes and misplays meant that the contenders went shoulder to shoulder. Sefless managed to outrun their opponent slightly, 8:7 on their T side. OpTic weren't about to let the second map slip as they mounted a comeback on their T side. Successful executes meant the team was able to outperform Selfless Gaming, leading to a spectacularly close 16:14 finish for OpTic, closing out Wednesday.

Thursday, June 2nd - Weekly semi-finals, Bo3

?France G2 Esports vs. United States Selfless Gaming – 13:2, 3:0 (16:2); 10:5, 6:3 (16:8)
Winner: ?France G2 Esports
Maps: de_Cache, de_Train
MVP: Belgium Adil "ScreaM" Benrlitom

The first best-of-three of the week, cut short by G2 Esports. The Frenchmen have been on a roll the entire week, they weren't about to cut it short. It all began on de_Cache, where Selfless simply couldn't come up with a solution to the French defence. Incredible plays were seen from G2, standing strong against the T sided Selfless. A stellar performance from G2 Esports lead to a beautiful 13:2 finish, quickly succeeded by a 3:0 T side. A flawless domination from the French lead to a 16:2 finish.

De_Train was the final map of the best-of-three series and slightly closer than the devastation witnessed prior. G2 Esports started on the T side of the map, reinstating their T side abilities on the map. Demonstrating yet again a stellar T side on Train, the French were able to secure a 10:5 lead on the American roster at the end of the first half. The second half saw a pretty lop-sided score in favour of G2 Esports where the team simply played their game. Selfless secure three rounds to G2's 6, ending the Bo3 at 16:8.

?Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas vs. Canada OpTic Gaming – 3:12, 0:4 (3:16); 13:2, 3:0 (16:2); 9:6, 7:8 (16:14)
Winner: ?Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas
Maps: de_Cobblestone, de_Overpass, de_Train
MVP: Sweden Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg

Perhaps one of the most enjoyable series of the week, a total of three maps were seen played out between the two teams. OpTic Gaming clearly enjoyed the first map, de_Cobblestone, as they were able to completely demolish NiP over the course of both halves. Starting out on the T side, the Canadian roster managed to not only gain a lead over their Swedish opponents, but absolutely annihilate them on the tougher, offensive side of the map. NiP were in shambles as they gave up the first half 3:12 in favour of OG. OpTic simply landed the pistol round, followed by two consecutive rounds to close out the first map of the series 16:3.

The Ninjas in Pyjamas albeit wounded by the previous result were not disheartened. From the start they demonstrated a thirst for winning, which definitely showed in their performance over the course of de_Overpass. Starting on the T side they consistently penetrated the defences of the Canadians, landing them an incredible 13:2 half time score. It was astonishing how they mirrored their opponents' performance from the previous map. In uniform fashion the Swedes cleaned up the pistol and two subsequent rounds, closing out the map 16:2, upping OG's previous score against them.

It all came down to the final map, de_Train. It was all or nothing for both teams and after the massive score swings in both matches, things were looking red hot. OpTic kick it on the CT side of things, showing a decent performance against the NiP aggressors. The Canadians manage to accumulate a triple round lead on NiP, closing the first half at 9:6 in their favour. The Ninjas compose themselves for the defensive half, looking to close out the series in their favour. Successfully, the Swedes lock out OpTic from bomb sites and ultimately pick up the win against OG on an incredibly close 16:14 note.

Friday, June 3rd - Weekly final, Bo3

?Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas vs. France G2 Esports – 10:5, 6:4 (16:9); 12:3, 4:0 (16:3)
Winner: Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas
Maps: de_Cache, de_Train
MVP: Sweden Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg

The grand final of Group B was truly one to witness. The Ninjas in Pyjamas played out of their minds and absolutely deserved all of the spoils they reaped. Starting of the final was de_Cache, where the Swedes advanced on the T side of the map. Rounds went by in their favour, as G2 were apparently unable to prevent their opponent from securing bomb plants and entry frags. This lead to a worrisome 10:5 lead in favour of NiP at the end of the first half. Following this result, the Ninjas had a level performance with G2 on their CT side, where both teams essentially went toe to toe, with NiP securing a slight lead, ending the map at 16:9.

De_Train was next, that has previously proved to be a map that G2 Esports very much enjoy and thrive on. Unfortunately for the Frenchmen, this would not be the case at all. NiP start on the T side of the map, where they prove their capabilities extensively. If G2 were dominating the T side in their previous matches against other teams, it seemed that the time was nigh for NiP to show them how it's really done. Twelve rounds went in favour of the Swedes, to a mere three in favour of G2. A clean four round sweep at the end meant NiP dealt with G2 Esports in a quick succession, culminating the weekend at 16:3.
