The grand finals of the Gigabyte Mineski Pro Gaming League's (GMPGL) Dota 2 tournament - Philippines will be held this weekend, with the Champion to be recognized as the country's representative at The Asia later this year.
The eight-team LAN tournament will surprisingly adopt a single-elimination format. It is but one of the many game titles to be contested on at the upcoming event called Pinoy Gaming Festival (PGF). PGF is the largest LAN gathering in the Philippines, and this year's will take place this 26th-27th of October at the World Trade Center, Pasay City, Philippines.
Mineski and Arcanys, the season's most consistent performers as reflected on the league points, will be receiving a one-game advantage on the first round. GNE.Dreamz, Execration, Pacific, CnS-Speratus and MSIEvoGT have also qualified by placing third to seventh in the league rankings. Last year's champion, Pagibig, completes the eight as they've won the wildcard qualifiers. However, this team currently features only two of the five players it did during The Asia 2012.
The teams who win their respective first round matches will also qualify to the $10,000 GMPGL SEA Grand Finals, where they will be joined with four other Southeast Asians teams: Titan, First Departure, Impervious and Joenet.
The Champions of this Philippine final will win themselves PHP 35,000 (812~ USD), as well as a slot on The Asia which will be held later this year. The second and third place finisher will receive PHP 20,000 (464~ USD) and PHP 10,000 (232~ USD) respectively.
All matches of the tournament, including the third-place decider, will be played on a best-of-three series.
Dota 2 appears to be the highlight of this year's PGF, having a slightly bigger prize pool than that of Warcraft III's Defense of the Ancients. This is a big statement, as the latter is still by far the more popular game in the country.
