KeSPA recognizes Dota 2; Korean Dota League to begin in February

Dota 2 has just been officially recognised as an E-Sport in Korea, by KeSPA (Korean e-Sports Association) today, and has announced a Dota 2 League that will begin in February. Consisting of both Amateur and Professional Leagues, team registrations will begin tomorrow, 24th January till 3rd February.

Following the sign ups, the inaugural season of the Korean Dota League will kick off on the 9th of February. Teams that register will be divided into three tiers, Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3. Each tier will consist of teams that are ranked according to their team's game proficiency and skill.

Tier 1 - This tier will consists of four professional teams, that will compete within the tier with their respective counterparts.
Tier 2 - This tier will consist of six teams, which will be a mixture of both professional and amateur teams.
Tier 3 - This tier will consist strictly of amateur teams, and with open registrations. Cybercafe tournaments, online tournaments will be the staple for teams in this category.

There will be four seasons of the Korean Dota League, in which the teams in their respective tiers will play in, which follows:

Season 1 - February to March
Season 2 - April to June
Season 3 - July to September
Season 4 - October to December

The Korean Dota League will have opportunities for team-tier mobility as well, which will go as follows: The top two teams of each tier will play against the bottom two teams of the next tier, with Tier 1's third and fourth placing teams playing against Tier 2's first and second placing teams. Tier 3's first and second placing teams will then play up against Tier 2's fifth and sixth placing teams. In this way, teams will be allowed tier mobility as lower tier teams have a chance of being promoted to the upper tiers, and similarly upper tier teams being demoted to the lower tiers.

Prize money distribution between teams will follow a unique set-up, with Teams that win in Tier 1 receiving 5 Million Won, or about $4,600 USD. In addition, Tier 1 teams will receive an extra 1 Million Won, or $900 USD for every subsequent successive win. Teams that win in Tier 2 will receive 2 Million Won, or about $1,800 USD. They too will receive an extra 1 Million Won for each subsequent successive win. Tier three teams will not be able to earn prize money, but rather, Tier Points that can be exchanged for a team spot in higher tiers. Tier Points are awarded to teams who have podium finishes in tournaments such as the Nexon Dota 2 PC Bang, Dota 2 Community Competition, and respective Nexon events. 

Teams in Tier 1 will follow a best-of-three Double Elimination format, whilst teams in Tier 2 will follow a best-of-one Round Robin format.

All games will be played in the Nexon Arena, Gangnam, and will be broadcasted on the SPOTV Game Channel. The games will also be streamed on YouTube, Naver, Tving and AfreecaTV, taking place every Wednesday at 19:00 KST (11:00 CET), and Sunday at 15:00 KST (07:00 CET).
