Bodycam first-person shooter Unrecord looks shockingly lifelike in reveal trailer

If you told someone this trailer was real-life footage, they would believe you.

An upcoming indie game called Unrecord released its reveal trailer today, which has since blown up online due to its shockingly lifelike visuals and potentially grim subject matter. The game is a tactical shooter told from the perspective of a police officer wearing a bodycam.

And when I say it looks like real life, I’m not kidding:

You could get through a good chunk of that video without realising it’s a videogame, that’s for sure. Developer DRAMA describes Unrecord as a tactical shooter that features, “complex dialogues, innovative gameplay mechanics, tough moral dilemmas, and a unique shooting system.” The shooting does look fluid since, due to the bodycam perspective, the player’s gun leans, tilts and pivots in different directions depending on whether they’re hiding behind cover or peeking out from a corner.

It’s not a straightforward shooter either, since we also see dialogue options that will eventually lead to multiple story paths, as the player investigates criminal cases and confronts a cast of characters in the campaign. DRAMA says, “The game's plot and presentation will be central to the gameplay experience, and players can anticipate a range of gameplay sequences as well as numerous plot twists.”

DRAMA also describes the game’s shooting as, “die and retry combat,” that leaves no room for errors, which makes sense given how immersive this game is aiming to be. Your character probably won’t be able to shake off a bullet the way other game protagonists do. Unrecord is powered by Unreal Engine 5 and looks incredibly impressive for a small-scale game like this, possibly due to it taking advantage of photogrammetry tech to build out its levels.

The game’s creator Alexandre Spindler posted an early proof-of-concept for the game that went viral on Twitter a while back:

Unrecord is currently in pre-production for PC and other platforms, and is available for wishlisting on Steam. We’ve seen gimmicky games like these fall apart after promising reveals before, but let’s hope Unrecord breaks that pattern. A bodycam first-person shooter told from the perspective of a cop is sure to go down in controversy when it launches however, and in some corners of the Internet, it already has.
