Ladder season 3 gets new maps

Three news maps will be added to the ladder pool while the same number will be removed including old-timers like Daybreak.

The StarCraft 2 ladder is saying goodbye to Daybreak, Newkirk Precinct and Korhal City. Their place is taken by the tournament approved Derelict Watcher, Klontas Mire and Zerus Prime.

Derelict Watcher is a 2-player map with a clockwise expansion pattern for the natural and third. Along with the main base, all three locations can be defended by setting a position at the bottom of the natural ramp.

Defending additional expansions, however, becomes more tricky as they can be attacked via multiple paths, some open right from the start while others only available upon elimination of destructible rocks. The center of the map features both wides spaces and choke points while watch towers cover the bottom/top-center of the map.

Klontas Mire

The vertically symmetrical Klontas Mire is one of those maps that can easily be split equally between players. What makes it different, however, is a narrow "rush" bridge between the two bases which is likely to be exploited for early attacks.

Once in the mid/late game, however, players will likely be using the other two paths from one half of the map to the other, located in the center and down on 6 o'clock. Six bases are available on each side, meaning that if the game does not end early, long macro scenarios (like on Newkirk Precinct, for example) are likely.

Zerus Prime

This four player X-shaped map provides expansions that will be difficult to defend past the early game. The natural is nicely tugged in a pocket but destructible rocks open a backdoor leading straight to it. Enormous ramp and a large open area lead to the third, making it hard to defend with terrain-altering spells like force fields. The fourth bases is also behind a wide choke and, on horizontal spawns, is dangerously close by air to enemy's third and fourth.

Vertical spawn positions have been disabled.
