WarCraft movie coming December 18th, 2015

The official twitter feed of World of WarCraft brings us the news - the long-awaited WarCraft movie is scheduled to air in two years' time on 18 December 2015.

It's been seven years since the first mention of a possible WarCraft movie till said movie getting a release date. First mentioned in 2006 in a Blizzard/Legendary Pictures press release, the WarCraft movie project would drift in and out of community's attention between scarce instances of new information.

The endeavor was off to a good start initially. Two years after the press release, Chris Metzen announced from the stage of BlizzCon 2008 that the movie will be "action packed and violent". In 2009, the project got its first release date (year 2011) as well as its director, namely Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead, the Spider-Man trilogy).

Few things started to fall apart shortly after that, however. Vague information coming from Metzen during San Diego ComicCon 2011 and community manager Nathaera in 2012 made fans doubt that the project will ever see light. Their doubts were further strengthened by Raimi leaving the movie to direct Oz: The Great and Powerful. It would be later revealed that Raimi's departure was due to Blizzard vetoing his pre-production work done by him and screen writer Robert Rodat.

It would not be until this year that new information would surface. In February, director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) was hired to head the project, and in April Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull stated in a very Blizzard-esque fashion that more information will be coming "soon".

Additional attention was brought on the movie when late this September, Blizzpro.com reported that actors such as Colin Farrell (In Bruge, Total Recall), Paula Patton (2 Guns), Paul Dano (Looper), Travis Fimmel (History Channel's Vikings), Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels) and Anton Yelchin (Terminator: Salvation, Star Trek: Into Darkness) have been shortlisted to star in the Warcraft movie. With the project moving forward, a release date was bound to be announced soon and that happened today.

According to Warcraft's official twitter feed, the movie will come to theaters December 18th, 2015 in a year which already has lots of high-profile movies such as Star Wars Episode 7, The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Batman & Superman, among others.
