Economy in wc3 (4961 reads, 7 replies, 11 months ago)
Hello!
Im a sc2 player that lately has been messing a bit with wc3, and i have a question regarding economy management.
In sc2 you want a crap ton of workers, about 30 per mining base, but in wc3 other than the 5 it takes to saturate each gold mine im kind of lost: i find myself floating lots of lumber (1k+) even with just 4 or so workers on it, but being really really gold starved (sub 100). The few builds recommended i found say i should generally get 2 production of buildings of whatever unit i'm going for (say, 2 ancients of the wind), but i find that i can't quite afford to produce out of them.
So, what is a good number for workers? How should i spend my lumber if i have too much?
Thanks a lot!

this is really race dependant. for elf, you wanna build eight or nine wisps for wood, and your done. It can happen you have a lot of wood, nothing bad about it.

Lumber isn't very important in this game. For expanple when you're orc and human you can send the peasents to another gold mine for extra gold (you dont need the wood)

you can also use the orc workers in fights (with spirit link for example)... gives you extra damage and health. Mostly enemys got auto cast on at their spells so you can reduce their mana having peons in fight which also take the casts. There are a lot of possebilities :)

First of all unlike in sc or sc2 in wc3 workers plays a much more important role, from human's peasant army to tower rush, elf's whisp dispels, to the fact that the lumber miners of ud itself is a fighting unit, rarely does any of them get lumber all the time. like #1 said its really race dependant.

Humans: this race 90% of the time goes for early expension, on average you have around 8 workers mining wood all the time as it needs the most lumber, plus mlitias are its key unit.

Ne: this race have the weakest workers, most buildings actually use up a worker, and are constantly used up to suicide attack enemy's summon units or mana, have around 8 of them as well but make sure to place them all over the map for sights

orc: toughest workers and almost never leave the base, orcs are rarely short in resources as its fighting forces are really supports for blademaster and almost play all games under 50 food, 5-6 is usually enough

Ud: like i said before ghouls are actually a fighting unit, ud has the highest lumber mining efficiency out of all races and are almost never short of wood (they are almost always short of gold though), i expect u are a undead player, if u build like 5 ghouls to farm all game you will probally get more lumber than u need. Plus once u get some upgrades for ghouls combined with dk's aura u can just watch ur lumber #fly. How many ghouls totally depends on ur strategy, if u r going for fiends build 3-4 is more than enough, if u are going for ghoul builds just build a shitload of them, even if they only farm while u are in the base recovering u will still have more than enough lumber

2 ghouls are bit less imo... 3 is the usually standard.

lumber isnt so important, only if youre human and want to go fast expansion its good to make worker until 50 food since you can always use them as militia for defense a push or creeping to get rid of them.

The most important economic aspect in wc3 is to be aware of your food and the upkeep you have to pay if you go over 50 and more. Its better only to build units over 50 supply if you are sure you gonna fight in the next 5 minutes. And if youre human you might build a lot of tower if you go for fast expansion instead of units for some time.
