Micro/Macro help? :( (6075 reads, 15 replies, 1 year ago)
I usually play orc
My current hotkeys are

1 - BM/SH
2 - 4 Grunts / 2 Raiders
3 - 2 Spirit Walkers / 2 Kodos
4 - Barracks
5 - Beastery
6 - Spirit Lodge
7 - War Mill
8 - Shop
9 - Altar
0 - Hall

I've literally never won once against a bot on normal mode. I'm really terrible and completely clueless as to what to do in battle. I often send my 2 heros after their hero(s) and have my grunts/raiders attacking footmen and my kodos/spirit walkers attacking other units. I just really have no idea what to do to be honest.

Any tips/feedback on a better/more efficient macro and definitely a better micro system would be enormously appreciated. Thanks in advance for reading and any help. Sorry I'm such a huge noob (I just recently purchased the game after watching the Beyond The Game documentary with Sky and Grubby >_<)

Well just play more games ,watch replays and look how pro gamers play and try to play like them ( but don't copy them much, because it will not make you better),Just play more games ,look what units you need to do and how you need to responde vs an enemy and when, just practice.... :-)

and for micro - well it doesn't matter which groups do you made but man why the hell you make so little army? and why 2 kodoes only?
See replays and look which units pro gamers make and make them too because its the best.
and when you're in fight - try always to control ur units correct - red HPed units heal/get them away, attack unit with the correct attack vs the correct armor of enemy unit ( like that raider has siege attack ,which is good vs buildings and a unit like... dryad . so better for you attack dryads with raiders because they'll get an extra damage from the raider's attack type, but he isn't the single unit with siege attack type, you got demolisher or even ranged units),focus hero or unit when you need etc.

It's normal that you lose a lot in the beggining, don't worry
Play more games, watch replays, try to always be doing something and not just watch the battles, but it's practice that makes perfection (if there is such thing)

If you're interested there is a thread here about micro-maps, which are good if you want to train micro only, and this way you can also see wich units are used vs what, since you start already with the units. The only downside is that the maps are a bit old, so strats are not updated, but it's great for practise.

What units do you recommend I create and how many? Also, is there any specific grouping you recommend (I.E. hotkey heroes + grunts to 1, raiders to 2, kodos and spirit walkers to 3?)

The orc micro map is set on NE... >_<

#3 the units you're using are good ,but not enough. you can watch though replays which units you have to do depends on enemy tactic so you can respond againts it with the correct units.you have to know which units you have to do in different cases , like that if you've being sieged ,use demolisher which is good vs enemies in range. and remember - play different tactic because playing the same tactic will never get you better :).

I can't recommand groups because of there's no such a thing :D everyone should play at any groups they want and it's not matter, nothing is better then the other ,its like that if ull put raiders at group 2 and ur enemy at group 5,it will never make any difference because you'll both able to control them fine.

Ah okay, thanks. I'll be sure to check it out in a moment :)
On the same note, are there any specific things I should be doing during battle? Because I'll be honest, I kinda just watch and feel clueless and helpless and 10 times out of 10 I lose. More often than not I have an equal or even larger army than the other person/bot, with a level 4 BM and level 2 SH but still lose because I really don't know what to do. Should I be focusing my heroes on their heroes? Should I be focusing all my grunts and raiders on one particular unit? Should I send my kodo beasts after their heroes as well? @_@ I basically just chain heal with SH, and target their hero with my BM and SH, as well as my spirit walkers/Kodos, while my grunts and raiders are set to attack particular units (should I just let them attack whatever unit is closest to them on their own?)

My macro is fine, as my resource, unit, (and even hero while creeping before battle) numbers are always about the same as a bot on normal, if not higher, up until battle. That's when I just completely get raped and lose.
Thanks for reading and all the help guys, I really appreciate it. It's frustrating losing against bots >_<

#6 when a unit of your army is about to die send it back to ur base. heal with sh also. ur kodos should eat other units. xD

if you play vs orc you should try to do this : kodos/raiders > sws, grunts > raiders, sws > grunts, bm > all LoL, or use bm to attack low hp units. With that said you should make your units focusfire that particular armor like, siege/piercing > unarmored, magic >heavy armor etc. Man I'm tired, can't explain better than this, sorry. For the record, I haven't played this game for a long time.

Edit: Just play more games and watch replays so you can see what the pros do.
Practice makes perfect!

Ty so much, that helped a ton. As for the replays portion, where do I put the replay once I have downloaded it?

You have to put them on the replays folder, which should be in the War3 folder, don't really know where it is in a pc cause i play with mac, but it shouldn't be hard to find.

As for the micro, as stengah said, you should focus units wich take more damage from your own units according to armor and attack type, but dont focus a raider with like 5 grunts, or most of them will be just moving around without really doing any damage. Ranged units are the best to focus-fire, while melee are supposed not to focus that much but tank and do damage to more units at a time, of course if you can focus it's better, but if not have smaller groups focusing different units.

There was a great guide in sk page i think, will try to find it

edit: it was not on sk, was on mym page and its only vs hu, anyways here it is: http://www.mymym.com/en/article/763.html

Thank you all so much :) My micro has already been improving after practicing on that map and playing numerous custom games against bots and keeping in mind which units to use against which. I'm finally able to beat bots on normal :D !!!!!!!

yea agree play ladder, playing with computer wont make u good even if u beat them. Cause ppl usually create anti-computer strategy that might not work with players. Your hotkeys seems ok, i mean theres no general rules from making hotkeys. I have seem to many different that im sure its ok if those works for you. The best way to improve your micro and macro is playing but u have to be commited to try to learn. U can play as much as u want but if u dont have the will to learn u simply wont. At start i suggest u that u tried to win every game no matter how impossible it might seem. Lossing is part of learning and u should be ready to handle loosing.

Also playing against better player gives u an idea of what to focus in battle and how to handle large battles and skirmishes. Also u need to try to stay active all the game especially in battles dont just watch how the units fight u have to always being in controll of your units or at least try to be. And also have fun if u are playing the game just to be better and learn but u are not having fun take a break u will learn more if u are enjoying the game. I have done that and i can assure you u learn more when having fun.

I'd firstly start by rushing with the Master of Swords trying to delay his/her/its development... and meanwhile keep developming myself...
