Pro's often miss tomes, drop items? (9981 reads, 47 replies, 2 years ago)
Hi guys,

Sorry to be asking a newb question but I'm a big fan of watching replays by the pros (given up trying myself, I'm a spectator)
I know the rules pretty damn well and love the game but why is it so frequently I see the pros get a the purble book of health and ignore the thing?
I know it could be by accident but it seems really really frequent tomes are ignored.

Furthermore, I see a lot of Orc and NE replays where the hero drops an item and picks it back up when they are in their base, often with a few slots still free on the hero? Are they just re-organising for hotkey shortcuts or even hitting it accidentally?

anyone know? thanks all.

When you drop a say a circlet then drink from well then put it back on you recover more hp/mp then if you didn't take it off.

As for tomes it varies player to player and situational. Such as if you have a very timing based build or are trying to creep jack someone you will leave the tomes but most of the time its because your busy macro/scouting/microing to notice it.

That is awesome and totally makes sense.
Goddamn I love this game, it's just too brilliant, I wish the RTS community agreed :( I fear this community will dry up (even more) when SC2 comes out.

check out some fpvods of pros playing and you will see why. Altho imo in most cases leaving tomes behind is just so fucking stupid. Ye things like agi tomes on int/str heroes dont matter. But int/str tomes are usefull on all heroes.

Surely all tomes help though right? I mean I spose there's a hero who is best to take the tome if you're running 2 heros, however you don't wanna leave a tome lying around for the enemy :/ every bit counts.

that being said, I'm no pro, to dictate what they do but it seems logical to keep them frmo the enemy.

Yeah look ok fair call - but I mean DOTA - I'm just not a fan, I really am not, I <3 <3 <3 War 3 and DOTA shits me that it split our community so much.

I normally anger people when I tell them what I think of SC too,.. (my opinion, War 3 is a deeper, richer game - for a start I can't stand the hundreds of units in SC, it seems un-necessarily busy)
Really wish this community would flourish and wish I got to it earlier. :/

Orc winning tournament after tournament doesn't help either.

#6 It's all about the timing, in most of the cases the players are simply wasting time picking those tomes. And yes, even though it may seem to cost them a couple of seconds to do it, these couple of seconds may well cost them the game.

about the tomes, yeah they are easily forgotten, even I do that most of the time.

For your second question.
Picking an item up/ dropping an item keeps your hp at the same %.

EG. you have 300/500 hp (with an item +100hp)

Without dropping item:

300/500hp (400hp max without item), moonwell heals you for 50hp = 350/500hp

Dropping an item:

300/500hp -> 240/400 (if you drop an item, you keep the same percentage hp!), moonwell heals you for 50 = 290/400hp(72,5%), putting back the item means still having 72,5% hp -> 362,5/500hp

362,5hp > 330hp

we have no idea of how 1 tome of strg makes diference.
every time u saver your hero with 1 life or a bit more, without that tome u should have lost your hero and mb the game

Not picking up manuals of health and stuff is just a mistake 99% of the time.

I really don't think that progamers just forget about the tomes. They know what the creeps drop, and they can't be too busy do macro/micro, this is not Brood War, you just don't have that much stuff to do. Most of the time they ignore the tomes simply for the timig's sake. Just an opinion :)

although i agree with #13 and #14, another logical explanation probably most the time tombs are not even seen. after the creep is dead they probably are not even looking at the actual hero creeping (hero hotkey and then right click mini-map). or maybe pros only care to remember the creep drops on the more important items cause they dont think a tomb or two will make or break the game but the better items sometimes can.

and yeah other times its probably they scouted enemy creeping and they have to take advantage of every second to disrupt and/or creep jack.

i remember hearing years ago that some people think its bad manner to get tomes, although to me that sounds dumb and if its the case they better not take TOE's either

well that is ridiculous.

Although, I know that e.g. ToD is for removing ToE from the game completely, as it brings a lot of luck factor to the game. (he probably isn`t too happy with the way blademaster creeping - depending on items, and hence the whole orc early- and midgame works I guess :P )

God why do always blademaster get involved ?

The only reason blademaster is "imba" is because he is fast and the only hero which items boost a specific skill called critical strike. And ofc he is the only hero that can walk trough units. Dont know why every noob complaining about that he is invisible thats not the problem the problem is that he is an espace artist that hits damn hard.

With that being said i think that ppl forget to pick up tomes cuz of timing, lets say that they r scouting or wanna do something more important, for expample pick up boots of speed
