Buy a Mac or PC? (744 reads, 36 replies)
First thing i would like to say I want this to be a serious open minded topic none of the PC >>>>> MAC EZ Bias

Its about that time I need to get a new computer and i never thought i would see the day i considered a Mac but everyone knows vista is a joke and now i feel i cant really trust windows :/

Now im wondering HOW big the change over to mac is, i know they are great for graphic people like myself and have some great audio/video software thats a huge plus

But im worried about compatibility for games I see people have alota problems with replays on SC ect ect using a mac

are macs more compatible with newer games? I know its guna be a big change no matter what having to find the mac version of msn and shit haha

but i need some feed back from some mac users, Or people that used a mac and came back to windows

Is moving to Mac worth the move to Avoid vista? :S

you say you dont want a biased discussion but you say "everyone knows vista is a joke"

with that attitude you can't really get a neutral result out of this topic.

i have vista for more than a year now and i NEVER had a problem with it.

you won't believe me or say vista is crap anyway, but well i even try to help you a bit.
mac has errors and bugs too btw.

so to the point:

i would prefer vista if you want to play games. just that plain.
ofc you can get it work on mac too BUT there is no real reason to prefer mac over vista other than this "uh vista is so stupid and mac is so cool"

Get a MAC if you want to appear "trendy"

Get a PC if you take gaming seriously

"everyone knows vista is a joke"

I say that having used vista for a while and seeing my friends and family having nothing but problems and hating

Lots of people bash macs know knowing anything about them or every using them.

If you used a mac, and had problems I want to hear about it, i just dont want any of the random "MAC SUCK GET A PC" from people that never used a mac in their life

Get PC if u dont wanna have problems with finding games. I prefer XP over Vista bcz Vista didnt show as very good exept for draining all memory from ur PC and for same results.

i didnt say mac suck or anything like that.

i just said
mac is not BETTER than vista imho.
and yes i used both.

mac/vista/xp/2000

mac + virtual windows xp to play games

i'm just telling you my opinion and dont say MAC SUCKS GET VISTA.
many people say mac is better because its "trendy" or "cool" imho.
it has no real advantages over vista

i have both of them. it took me 1-2 days to get used to the mac o/s. it is fast, there are no viruses or anything like that that works on o/s x afaik and it is simple to use. but mac o/s x has bugs and problems too. it is far from perfect.

my pc's lcd was broken and i had to use the mac at home (i don't use the mac usually, i had bought it for my employee) until it got fixed. i installed sc:bw and the logitech mouse software which i had so much trouble finding on the net. the mouse worked without any problems but it just didn't feel any good. whatever setting i tried, i could never make the cursor movement any close to what i like. i never played a game (even ums) because of that.

other than the weird cursor movement, the mac o/s just doesn't feel right. i don't know how to explain, its kinda odd. there's something missing. i had no problems in finding programs (office, slsx etc...) but the mac just doesn't feel complete. maybe it is because of using pcs for more than a decade, you should try and see for yourself.

i would never ever even consider using vista. i don't even like xp and i am going to downgrade to win2000 pro because it is at least 2x faster than xp and problem-free. i hope i can get everything on my pc work properly.

P.S. #1 vista?!?! hahahahahha insane!

Vista's pretty bad, you're better off getting XP unless the trendiness of your start bar is the most important aspect of your comp.

At the end of the day, depends what you want to use it for - macs are good for a lot of things, but gaming is not one of them. They're good for multimedia stuff, programming, and are more trendy than most computers... although that doesn't matter if you're buying a desktop.

A lot of blizzard games including BW and W3 are supported on Mac, although thirdparty tools like Chaos or ICCup launcher might or might not work. You'll need to find out yourself if they're compatible with macs or not.

Avoid vista, though, whatever you choose. Its only noticeable differences from XP are that it consumes far more system resources (2GB of RAM is recommended to run vista, which is ridiculous for an operating system) and perhaps that it looks a little better. A lot of programs don't like Vista, though that'll probably change as it gets older.

If you're a big, big person for graphics and music then Mac is probably better, as their software is superior (like logic) and so on, but otherwise XP will do fine. It only breaks if you break it yourself.

Untrue.

You can always revert back to Windows XP.

OS X beats vistas so bad. Vista is a poor copy of OS X. If you like to photoshop a lot etc i recommend MAC over PC. All big magazine and advertising companies etc. use mac cuz of it's overwhelming graphic chipsets. MAC is fast and reliable but should not be bought if you are a hc gamer or pc tuner.

I've been using macs for 15 years, and if gaming is your primary concern i would not get a mac. Blizz is about the only company that bothers and follows trough their games on mac, and those work well tho.

You have to run virtual PC to run most games, and thats not worth it imo. But for picture/vids/etc i would get a mac.

As far as viruses: i remember haveing about 3 viruses that has affected my system for all those 15 years.

Incredible stability and seldom/never problems. OS is so easy and low maintinance.

But dont get a mac if you want to keep playing a lot of games...

I can't believe it is the same old story. People, why can't we make a difference between hardware and software huh?
"PC is bad because windows sucks..." is the stupidest thing anyone can say. Now both are running intel processors and both can run windows/mac osx.

My personal opinion as a system administrator is the following :

Windows XP = Great compatibility, widespread use, fresh drivers, ideal for work and gaming. Spam, viruses and other nuisances can be avoided with a good firewall and anty virus software. If you want to avoid Vista go for XP :)

LInux = uses a Unix-like a kernel, it grants its stability. Few games can be run I would mainly use it as a server computer but it is a great alternative if you are not spending 24 hours a day with gaming. It is free. No viruses

MAC OSX = The rip-off of the century. There is nothing you cannot do on a PC that you can on a mac. NOTHING. They are always loud as how cool mac is for movies and audio. The professional audio and video editing sofwares are developed for Windows. OSX combines the bad aspects of Windows and Linux. It is a commercial product it costs money while USING THE SAME UNIX KERNEL as linux!!!! OSX is just as hard to play games on as linux. The only reason why MAC does not get so many viruses is that it makes up roughly 9 percent of the market. Clearly a rip-off for wannabes

About hardware?

Easy question. Take a look at prices. A mac book starts around 1000 dollars. You can buy 2 pcs from that money. A PC is easily upgraded a MAC is not. End of story...

You can install Windows Vista or XP on a Mac and run them in parallell. You have full Windows compatibility. I suggest you try a Mac. And on it, you install both Mac and Windows.

well clay, im a software developer and i have used mac & pc so heres my opinion:

Mac is really good, virus free, very helpful for graphic designers, with solid O.S, and a lot of good stuff, probably the problem is that they're expensive in comparation with PC and that some programs arent compatible with mac.

PC is cheap so the extra money u save can be used to other things, but i suggest if ur using a PC use Ubuntu or antother GNU/Linux distribution. Why?
because they're a lot better than any windows, its free and makes ur PC cheaper if u ensamble it.

Theres like 12389071237123 reasons to don´t use windows, maybe u won´t believe cause its the OS more commercial but thats the true.

Vista is crap
in Xp u can do the basic stuff but its anoyying if ur a programmer, if u think crossing an option on ur firewall will protect u, ur ingenuous, u can´t configure all in ur pc, Ur doing something important and ur pc just freezes? well that doesnt happen in linux :D

Use linux on ur PC or buy a Mac
